I'm also wondering if it's worth the hassle of going this route ~ will it get that much better results than just using the digital amps built into GarageBand?
Clearly, this is a full on n00bitry situation, so any help would be appreciated!

Are you launching Sgear in your DAW? I don't see an Sgear vst in my computer anywhere? How would I use it and record with it?
