School a n00b on IRs ~ how to get 'em/how to use 'em?

Post by draelyc »

Running GarageBand on a MacBook Pro. Got a load box with a line out I can use to record my amps "silently," but the so-called cab emulation built into it basically just chops all the treble off of the sound. I could disable the cab emulator, but I'd need something to run that signal into in order to make it sound like a proper guitar rig.

I'm also wondering if it's worth the hassle of going this route ~ will it get that much better results than just using the digital amps built into GarageBand?

Clearly, this is a full on n00bitry situation, so any help would be appreciated! :thu:

NadIR from ignite amps is one of the most popular IR loaders and is free. http://www.kvraudio.com/product/nadir-by-ignite-amps

You can view various IR collections and purchase them from Celestion, Ownhammer, Rosen Digital, among other places. A lot of these sites have a freebie IR that you can try out.

Speaking of freebies, there are tons of them out there. Once you get the IR loader setup in Garageband ask around if there are any free IRs modeled after the speakers and cabs you like.

Here's a link to a bunch I've collected on my Google Drive. God's Cab is an OS Mesa 4x12, one of my favorites.

If you're talking IRs; you might as well be talking about modelers. I keep telling you

Thanks, y'all! It really helps having some ideas about where to start with all that stuff ~ for a n00b, it's pretty overwhelming...

In the meantime, I've experimented with miking my actual amps through the Blackjack interface into Garageband, and it was a helluva lot easier getting a good sound that way than it was trying to get a natural sounding amp tone captured into the old Zoom desktop recorder I used to use. Didn't even have to get too overpoweringly loud, which surprised me! If I can do that without blasting out the wife & kids, that may be the way to go, for now. But sooner or later I'mma want to set up a silent recording method, and this info will definitely help, so thanks!

Dude, I dig. Already did some experimenting with the amp models built into GarageBand, mang, so I'm no purist. :D I started this thread to see A) if there would be some way to rig my actual amps for silent recording, and B) if doing that would be in any way better than just running a straight up modeling setup (spoiler alert ~ I figured the answer to the second question would be "no"... ).

But rest assured, if/when I dive fully into modeling for recording porpoises, you'll be the first forumite I call upon, brutha! :thu:

Step #1) Re-setup all your guitars.

We'll continue once you've completed this step. :D

Since you are already mulling over using GarageBand amp sims; I seriously think you should give SGear a go. I think there are some tones (and bundled cabs) in there that you would really dig. Give the free trial a spin.

Are you launching Sgear in your DAW? I don't see an Sgear vst in my computer anywhere? How would I use it and record with it?

It can run standalone or within the DAW iirc. My trial ran out so I can't double-check   make sure you've add the SGear vst path in reaper and rescanned for plugins.

I've read good reviews of SGear, so good to have that confirmed.

Just posted the new live amp clip in the main forum, if y'all are at all curious. :nerd:
