One hour commute. Each way...

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
I've been making a 50 minute one way commute to school/work every weekday for the past 13 years. I actually enjoy it; gives me time to jam some rad tunes because I rarely listen to music outside of my car

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
38 miles each way for me- 55 minutes door to door.
i wish to god i had 2 hours of time to myself added back a day. 10 hours a week. 40 hours a month. 480 hours a year. that i sit on my ass and drive.
granted-- yep.. music in the car, time to talk to people on the phone.. but fuck. i could be playing, mixing, riding my bike, walking my dogs, talking to my wife... doing OTHER shit that's my life, and i'm not.
but balanced with what i get LIVING where i live... it's the compromise i make. i could live closer in suburban hell i commute to... but i live up in country world. i like it here, and people don't suck. so i make it work.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
So, my companies move has been made official.
I've been given two options.
Option one: I receive $1.30 per hour increase in pay, and two days per week, I work at home.
Option two: $3.70 per hour increase, with each day in the office.
My daily commute will be 55 miles, one hour & three minutes.
Choose for me, I can not bear too...
(totally leaning towards the cash)
What would you do?

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
so let's see - assuming you work 40 hours per week:
would you rather have $52 more per week (gross)
or another $98 on top of that - and have (2) days a week working from home?
another way of looking at it - for the 4 hours of the additional drive time - they are giving you $24.50 per hour pay during that time.
Unless you make more than $25/hr - I think I'd take the money too.
(although it would be nice to stay home 2 days a week - I guess it would depend on how 'easy' working from home would be for you)

I'd take option one. Two days of reduced stress, less gas money and less wear and tear on the car.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
If there is room for advancement and you think spending more time at the office will help you get a better position, then take the 5 days in office.
If no room for advancement, take the 2 days at home.
Going to the office gives you $2.40 more per hour than staying home...
$2.40 more per hour x 40 hours = $96.00 before taxes... that's about $70.00/wk after taxes.
If your commute is 55 miles each way (total of 110 miles/day):
220 miles in a car that gets 28 mpg = about $19.00 in gas
You pocket about $51.00 extra a week, to go to the office for 5 days.
Another way to look at things: it costs you about $25.50 a day to stay home.
If your commute is 27.5 miles each way (total of 55 miles round trip/day):
110 miles in a car that gets 28mpg = $8.50 in gas
You pocket about $61.50 extra a week, to go into the office for 5 days.
It costs you about $30.75 a day to stay home.

Room for advancement is a good point, but unless he is leasing a newer car that he never has to repair, the amount he pockets will be reduced by vehicle maintenance.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
Lol, been doing a 1-1.5 hour drive each way for around 20 years...though it originally was more like an hour each way. Traffic has gotten significantly worse in LA the last 2-3 years. I do work from home 1 or 2 days a week, which really helps keep me sane.

30 min walk uphill, then 35 min train ride.
Totally normal here, I live 30 miles outside of London. I am more annoyed at the cost of my train fair.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
I've been fortunate enough to work relatively close to where I've lived (10 miles or less), for most of my life, but I did work at a company for 5 years where the commute was about an hour, and it didn't bother me for some reason.
