One hour commute. Each way...
So, that's what I'm facing with a company move, a one hour drive there and one hour drive home.
Anyone else have a commute that far, or is it time to find employment elsewhere?

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
I travel 33 miles to work and 33 miles home... if it's a good day, it takes 90 minutes each way.
When it's raining, it takes 2 hours! Once, it took 3 hours to get home.
On Columbus Day and other working holidays, I sleep a bit longer because, it only takes 45 minutes.
I suggest, bringing a stack of CDs (or your iTunes) with you... and keep buying lottery tickets!

I did that for a few years.... I live in the North West of Trinidad and my office was in the South West... there would be days where I'd drive to work, drive back up to the northern part of the island, drive back to the south then drive home..... all in all, as long as there's no traffic and the company paid to maintain my vehicle I didn't mind too much

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
I've done that before, worked for a company that was already farther than I liked driving, but 2 years in they decided to moved even farther out, putting it about 50 miles each way.
I did it for about a year, an hour each way and crappy traffic, I couldn't do it anymore. That was before I had kids, I would never consider it now. I prefer to be no more than 15 miles away. My current job is less than 12 miles and I can just take surface streets and get there in 15-20 minutes. I like not having to deal with the stress of freeway traffic.

Suck it up Buttercup.
Been driving 1-1.5 hour one way commute for 12 years.
But for really real - if you can get another job closer to home for the same pay and benefits/perks or comparable then do it. Your time is so valuable and losing it fucking sucks.
And if you don’t get a new job then make friends with podcasts and audio books.

There may be an opportunity for "work at home" days, but that's yet to be verified.

yeah.... it would be rough.... One of my Brother's friends ran his business from his home for years and dude said if he didn't dress like he was going to an office, as in, suit and tie, he wouldn't be in the right mindset and would end up getting distracted easily....
I totally get what he's saying... working at home just has too many distractions for it to work for me.. UNLESS I had a dedicated and some what isolated office
Re: One hour commute. Each way...
1 hour is my max. if it is interstate, then i can't stand that crap. an hour drive down the interstate, after work, in the winter (which means it is already dark when you leave), in the rain is terrible. in contrast, an hour commute through the country can be nice; wildlife, forests, etc... the commute is also much better if you driving more westerly in the a.m. and more easterly in the p.m.

That sucks. 45 minutes is about the max i can do without going insane. Right now I'm at 10 minutes without traffic to 30 with.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
I've turned down some significant offers/money because I work 4 minutes from home. Time saved in the commute is priceless. Sure, there would have been raises, etc.. But, even with a company vehicle, working on the road costs money. No matter how efficient you try to be. And it costs time. A lot of fucking time. When I add it all up, staying put makes me more money because it costs me less in day to day maintenance, stress and bullshit.
At this point it'll take a minimum of $20k-$25K more a year for me to even consider a move.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
In L.A. I had a job that was 25 miles from my house. Took me 2 hours in the morning with the 405 traffic. At night, I would just go to the gym and stay there until 8pm because if I drove back at rush hour it would be a 3+ hours drive. Without traffic, it was 30 minutes. So I was waking up at 5:30 to be at work at 8 and coming back home around 8:30-9p. I did that for 2 years. I don't miss that at all.
I've had better paying job offers recently and turned them all down because I get to work from home now. I work on a t-shirt and underwear, play guitar as much as I want during the day and can move freely without worrying about finding a new job. There is no price for that freedom. I will stay here for as long as they want me. If I retire on this job, I am ok with it.

Sounds like a sweet gig.
Hoping I get the opportunity to try it from home, or 2-3 days from home anyway.
I do like my job.
Also thought about looking into Rideshare on Craigslist.
Maybe I'm not the only person making that trip.
Hopefully it's a better class of people than the musicians section of craigs.

The beauty of working at home is you don't have to be that disciplined. Well, unless you are on an hourly pay and have to be available on the phone etc...
But as far as my job goes, as long as I am meeting deadlines, they don't care. So I pretty much make my own schedule.... I do have a separate office area so technically I "go to work" in my own house. I do have all my guitars and rigs in my work room though and Kimmi hangs out here with me all day if she's not working (she works from home too).

3 but more by choice than necessity.
And that's not insane in Los Angeles. That's actually pretty normal.

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
Reminds me of the bad old days when I had almost an hour commute to work each way in Atlanta....the only good part about that is that in Atlanta, everybody drives like speed demons, so it was fun.
Now I work from home and do whatever the fuck I want. I keep getting tempted to go look for a better paying job (i.e., decent salary), but I keep factoring in commute time and if I'm in an office, I have to look busy, so for now, I'm staying planted.

After Tuesday, even the calendar goes WTF!

Re: One hour commute. Each way...
My wife wanted to move further from the city - we moved north about 20 miles.
I drive 40+ minutes to work each morning - that's taking the turnpike - and it's like 27 miles.
In the afternoon - to cut my toll expense in half - I drive home on a state highway - takes an hour - but it's only 20 miles.
If I don't get stuck in traffic - I don't mind it.

I’ve been working for myself at home for 11 years. I honestly can’t imagine ever working for anyone again. I’ve gotten great job offers but it’s not worth my freedom and autonomy.
Re: One hour commute. Each way...
I'm spoiled AF living in Lubbock with the commutes. It's a cold day in hell when you can legitimately run late due to traffic. My commute was 45 minutes maximum when I had to walk to work, any time I had a car it was always less than 20 minutes, even if I was 15 miles away.
People I know however, have taken much longer commutes when work required it. My friend's dad was CFO at a hospital and drove at least an hour to work anywhere he lived other than here (dallas, NJ, bay area). My dad lived in saylorsburg and commuted to brooklyn every day and currently commutes about 30 miles to tobyhana. Sometimes the job is worth, depends on what the trade offs are.

well if its deadline based stuff I can see how that could work... so like project to project.. I could do that... but day in day out stuff like I do for my job I don't think it could work... I would LOVE to work from home, but that would likely mean a change of career lol

Now I am driving about 7 minutes DTD, about 6 miles. Much nicer.
