Cooking...

Post by IndyWS6 »

… I really enjoy it. Come at me, Bro

I'm also pretty good at it. I suck at certain things (baking [f#$% that], deserts [couldn't care less]) but almost everything else is in play. I only mention that to discuss this; a "Chili Cook-Off" where I work in about 3 weeks. I'm thinking about entering. Chili is not necessarily my specialty, but I can bust that shit out, if needed. There will be 4 categories; mild, medium, hot and super-hot. Crazy hot salsa IS one of my specialties, so I'm immediately interested in the super-hot category. But, common-sense says that you can't win with a super-hot recipe (there's one winner - not one winner per category). The number of people that actually enjoy super-hot (I'm talking Trinidad Scorps, Reapers, etc.) is really small. But it would also be enjoyable to hurt some people :D

What say you GAB-Broski's? Should I enter? Should I resist the urge to hurt people and shoot for something with heat, but not quite "Dragon's Breath" level? I'd kind of like to win for the bragging rights. Yup, I'm shallow that way LOL

Always enter. They're fun. We do them at work a few times a year.

We did a killer mac & cheese cook-off. I did one called "Stoners Delight" that had like 6 cheeses, roasted jalapeños and chicken tenders in it. It was delicious.

We have one at my work too - mild - hot - vegetarian (that can be mild or hot) - but we have one winner per category. Entries usually vary from great to truly terrible - but it's a good day for eating. Everyone gets a small cup/bowl, and tastes what you want. All the chilis set up in crock pots, with whatever 'accents' people bring in.

I love making my spaghetti sauce, garlic, onions, mushrooms, chicken, pork, sausage, and sometimes I make stuffed meatballs. We make our own cheesy bread and my daughter helps me in the kitchen. Its fun for her and she's become more self independent.

Trying to get better on the grille as well. But its been raining and too hot all summer.

OP, go in a different direction and make it not spicey. :D

For the record, it's NEVER too hot to cook outside. :cop:

It has to have some heat, but I've decided to shoot for mild/hot. Most people that say they like hot food don't really like hot food. Bunch of pussies

Common misconception... It doesn't hurt on the back-end, but it will rip your face clean off

perhaps you have never had hot enough food then - cause it can certainly tear you up on the way in AND on the way out.

GO FOR IT AND DO GAB PROUD!!!! :rawk:

A few years ago, I made a 5 gallon pot of 16 Bean Chili for a party at a friend's house.
It was made with cubed, London Broil instead of ground beef and I used lots of fresh cilantro.
I added the London Broil and diced raw onions just before serving to give it some crunchyness and so the steak and onions wouldn't absorb all the chili sauce and lose their own flavor.
When I put it out, everyone shyed away and I was like WTF??? Shit took me two days to make and cost about $50.00!!!
I grabed a bowl and while eating it, I raved to everyone how amazing it was... once they saw me eating some, they all lined up to get a bowl.
It was all gone in an hour and some guy scraped the pot clean, with corn chips!
Sometimes you gotta lead the heard to the water!

I love to cook. Its creative & kinda relaxing & rewarding.

But HOT? I can do hot, but not THAT hot. The wife cant handle hot stuff, so I really cant go nuts with it.
I like making chili, and I like making chili-verde, & I like it just hot enough to make my head sweat. But... the wife cant eat that. So I just go barely warm.

I also like making pizza & being a little creative with it. I like grilling... thats just great stuff.

My most favorite activity; pre-measured kits, a la Blue Apron, are a godsend to apartment dwellers, especially those who live on the road, like me.

I like to cook but the kitchen is my wife's domain. I've cooked maybe 10-15 meals in the last 7 years or so.

I’m reviving this thread, because I’ve been doing a fair bit of cooking during my vacation. I made two different ragus, one more closely a la Bolognese, the other a Crockpot number, and made crêpes for Christmas. I haven’t done much serious cooking since moving back to Madison, and I was worried that I was too rusty to be of any use in a kitchen. I’m pleased to state that I am still that good, and I am full. I have three more days left of my vacation, and I’m thinking both fried chicken, and something healthy, yet hearty. Chankonabe, if I had some of THOSE chops.

Awesome...
Im big on Italian food. Im sure I dont know squat, but I try, & sometimes I succeed...
With the advent of Utoob, theres so many good cooks, & for the most part, I like watching. Just watching a few make Sunday Gravy, & I dig that. Ive made some good sauce, but not a TRUE Sunday gravy. I think thats on my agenda within the next week..

Cool cat right here...
Ive never even tried Bragioli, but its part of the deal...
