I feel for you, son. I'm looking at their location map, and looks like their reach JUST misses Chicago. :(
It is 100% NOT a typical New-York style pizza, which is usually what I go for. There are a few snowbirds around here that moved south and opened pizza joints. They're all really good. But Mellow Mushroom is an artsy-hippy themed place, lots of out of the ordinary topping combinations, and simply amazing dough. The crust is honestly the best part of their pizza.

Mmmm, sounds yummy. I love a good crust on a pizza. :)

We don't have very good takeout here. Pizza Nova used to be good but now all the stores seem to be run by Chinese folks who have only the barest notion of how to make pizza. Pizza Pizza is ubiquitous, but their pizza is mediocre at best.

I wish I was back in Italy.

As far as chain pizza, I used to like Godfathers..then they closed up. They sell Godfathers pizzas at gas stations, but they dont taste the same.

I liked old school Dominos, before they changed recipes to "cant taste nothing but garlic, butter, & other spices" shit.

Little Caesars was good, but they closed. They opened another store up, but they only have the ready made pizzas, which are hit or miss. The past few Ive had were like cardboard with grease dumped on it.

Pappa johns...Just looking at a Pappa Johns commercial makes my guts gurgle. Just a slice of Pappa Johns will make me spray mud

inorite? If there's any chain pizza worth eating, it's Papa John's or the improved Domino's. Not saying it's the best thing going, but as far as chains...
Well, really Donatos, but there's none anywhere near me.

BrendanO wrote:I dunno. I had it, and it was alright. I mean, it wasn't a bad pie, but it's just on par with any number of small pizza joints I've eaten at (in like, ~25-30 states) that takes any amount of pride in their food. Mangia and Homeslice are two of the "best" places here, but neither of them rates much higher than "not Pizza Hut." But, then again, that's me.

I like home slice because they serve great beer. Don't remember the pizza other than it was pretty decent. Mind blowing? No.

My fave things about Michaels, (other than it's New York Style) , is that they take care of their regular customers. If you dine in, they'll take your left over pizza & wrap it up in aluminum foil (I asked the owner why they do that..he said it tastes better later on, than it would if it were just in the box). They dont skimp on anything. Sometimes, they'll charge you cheaper than they should. They put extra syrup in their fountain drinks. When you come in, they always are friendly & ask about your family & friends that they know. Just a good family business. And like I said..its REAL pizza. It's not 10 tons of crap. Just dough, sauce, cheese, & whatever other toppings you get. Not a bunch of added crap to hide the flavor of it. Good stuff.

I dig hearing them talk too. They have the stereotype brooklyn native accents.

Dan's Pizza in Webster, TX (passionate owner and makes a damn good pie) http://www.danspizzaco.com/
Angelo's Pizza & Pasta in Webster, TX (the best NY style pizza in Houston, IMO) http://angelospizza-pasta.com/
Star Pizza in Houston, TX (great crust and alot of unique pizzas) http://starpizza.net/
Boondoggle's in Seabrook, TX (wood burning brick oven style pizza, enough said) http://www.boondogglespub.com/
Bombay Pizza Company in Houston, TX (Indian/Italian fusion pizza and pretty damn good at it. The saag paneer pizza  ) http://www.bombaypizzaco.com/

I'm not a fan of most fast-food/major chain pizza. While some aren't that bad, I could probably find a mom-&-pop pizza joint that makes a better pie for the same price. About the only major chain pizza I like is Pizza Hut's thin crust. Their cracker crust is pretty dang good.

In the UK I like pizza express and my local strada does nice garlic bread.

In Japan there is some nice pizza places in Tokyo, but down here it tastes like shit, it's so bad Pizza Hut would be like a 5 star pizza place.

Sadly, Bruno's in San Marcos Ca, which is now closed.... Pizzas as big as the table & twice as good as they were big.
I saw people go in for their 1st time & say they were hungry, so theyd get a large. Theyd end up taking home over half of it..
It was around since I was a kid, & some good times were had there.

I could see why the damn place closed though (shitty service). And yes, they had big ass pizzas (but not my favorite).

Have you tried that new ale house place right near it? Real good beers on tap and great food. Crazy busy though just like everything in Restaurant Row.

Not sure about their pizza, but good times were had with some friends when we went. Could be that they bought for my birthday...but beer always helps.

Back on topic, I know I will catch hell for this but: Costco has some kick ass pizza too.
