A noisy CryBaby wah - where to start ?

Post by Reverse Entropy »

My friend has a VERY noisy CryBaby wah - when engaged it has slightly increased hum but a LOT of whooshy noise that modulates with the pedal's motion. Way more than normal.

Looking at the schematic, I'm suspecting the bypass cap before the input buffer is no longer shunting HF noises to ground (whoosh) or the bufffer or filter stage transistors are bad.

Unfortunately my little Tek scope is dead, and I am now without an o'scope.
Any other suggestions for common wah problems ?

Before any mods.... How is he powering it? Try it with a battery and see if it changes. Also, open it up and clean the pot and wah thread. I've seen a lot of Cry Babies with "issues" that were due to the inductor being too close to the power source or just dirty components..
