The other 2 are great in their own right, but it's not even close in my book.
As far as his tone, I think his live tone was far superior to anything they tried to capture in the studio. And, yeah the Tribute record was re-engineered to sound more compressed, too, so we can't really use that as an example.
Listen to some of Randy's sound check stuff. Sounds like cranked plexis sounded in 1982.
Saying he's the "best" takes nothing away from Jake or Zakk, but its simply true.
Both Jake and Zakk are amazing players, but I'd even rank Jake's playing with Ozzy above Zakk's just because it was pretty unique. Zakk, well, he's always sorta Zakk, which means a bazillion squeelies while he's playing his ass off. But when I think Ozzy guitarists, I think Randy all the way. Even if he hadn't died, those albums he played on, epic.

It's become quite a trendy thing on the internet to downplay Zakks skills. Dude is a monster that can rip anything from acoustic to Hendrix to extreme metal. Listen to some of the playing from the people that put him down and you can tell they are just jelly. Not even a huge Zakk Wylde fan btw. If Iommi was included I would have chose him. Not because of his technically ability but his ability to write memorable, classic songs.
I won't ever dogg or deny Zakks' talents and ability. He is, simply put, a amazing guitar player. But without Randy, whom he has admitted to being "His Guy", Zakk isn't who we all know him as today.
Who can really touch this? People can approximate it. But who can really touch it?
of the 6 Ozzy albums worth a damn (Blizz, Diary, Bark, Sin, NRFTW and NMT), based on the songs, I definitely like the Zakk era best.
However, as guitar players go, just in general, I have to give the thumbs up to Jake and Badlands is the most up my alley of anything any of those 3 ever did. not to mention the sonic ground he was very capable of covering
Joe Holmes. Best tone and wicked chips. But if we're talking recorded guitarist, I'd say Randy.
Tone was horrid but major chops and great sense of melody. I can't do Zakk's squealies or fake, southern biker thing and while Lee is great, he didn't always do it for me.

Randy Rhoads, hands down, not even close. If it wasn't for Randy, Ozzy's career was over & there would have been no other Ozzy guitarists. Pretty sure if you asked Jake & Zakk they would say Randy also.

ooo good call on Joe, did a killer job on tour with DLR too, awesome tone

I saw Ozzy with JH. His tone was freakishly huge. Probably the fullest Marshall sound I've ever heard, if that makes sense. I remember leaving there thinking I had just heard the best metal tone ever. I thought maybe it was just a coincidence, like the stars had just aligned (I was also pretty high ), but I've heard others say the same thing about him.
Joe's tone is insane. But just like everyone post Randy, Joe got bit by Sharron.
He has a new band called Farmikos but they've been making a record for a short amount of time. About 2-4 years' worth of time.
It's all Jose Modded Marshall's.

Cool, figured they were boosted and/or modded Marshalls of some sort. Actually just watched that short Farmikos studio thing. Dude can play.
Yeah Steve Henning gave me a pretty comprehensive run down on how Joe gets his sound.
The Jose doesn't have a ton of gain. He uses the input gain control on his delay to boost the amp and some old J-80 pickups.

Dude I'm the first one to admit that I'm a shitty guitar player, but there's nothing really impressive in this video to me. I could grab my 12 string and do that.
That said, Randy was my favorite of the three.
Zakk just turned into the one of if not the best cliché of metal doucheness that ever existed.
I mean come on... Zakk Wylde? What a stupid way to spell that. His real fucking name is Jeffery. (insert facepalm here)
I'm liking Zakk on this... I say grab your webcam and throw it down with a 12string
LOl at that zakk video not being anything special. Dude if anybody here could play and sing like that they would be on the internets. zakk fucking KILLED it there. I cant even finger pick a 12 string like that let alone sing ON key WITH soul.

No it's become trendy to make fun of Zakk for becoming a caricature of himself. And it's completely justified IMO.
singing he's a combo of Greg Allman, Ozzy, and Axl....but last few years the Axl part has dominated which really grates on me I saw him Live in a small bar on the Stronger Than Death tour and his chops were awesome He keeps cranking out the discs- you have to give him that...albeit just a few tunes on them are great these days, most forgettable/repetitive His looks don't bother me at all because my speakers don't care
