Best TV drama to date

Post by Harvest »

What say you, GAB?

I gotta say Breaking Bad, followed by 6FU and then Sopranos. It remains to be seen how the legend of Madmen, Homeland and SOA will end up... all of them are worthy IMO. Homeland has the most promise to usurp the throne IMO.

Sorry, haven't been exposed to much non-North American TV lately (Top Gear UK excluded). I've heard the Israeli version of Homeland is excellent though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoners_ ... (TV_series)

Fringe I've only seen a few episodes. Didn't really hook me either.

I listed 11 shows with at least 3 seasons... some of them with 8 or more. Probably >1000 hours of my life I'll never get back. How dare you accuse me of having no culture?? LOL! :cop: If you think True Blood is amazing, let your GAB peers validate your feelings!

*edit* BTW, I forgot Boardwalk Empire, which should definitely make this list IMO.

Except for the fact that it's a sit-com, not a drama.

You're not the only one. :)

Some of the Sopranos and a few of Six Feet Under and none of the rest. Not a TV drama person.

The correct answer is Sex and the city.

All 6 seasons. Which I own on DVD boxset

And also own both movies on DVD boxset.

Absolutely. Favourite show over the last couple years. I think it says a lot that even during the last few episodes of Breaking Bad, having PVR'd both shows, I'd watch Boardwalk Empire first.

Breaking Bad was good, but IMO overrated. I couldn't help but think HBO would have done a way better job than AMC with that show.

I'd add Shameless (either UK or American one) to the list too. Not at the same level of, Deadwood or the Wire for example, but good nonetheless, great combination of comedy and tragedy.

The current season of Boardwalk Empire is pretty boring. Rome was also pretty good. Has anyone else seen the first season of Ray Donovan, with Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight?

I liked the first season of Ray Donovan. I voted for the Wire, best TV show ever. I've never watched Rome, the Shield or Sons of Anarchy. Kelsey Grammer's Boss on Starz was a great show.

Breaking Bad. I have all the Wire shows and need to start watching them. I also like what I've seen of Deadwood so far.

Some other box sets that might be worth checking into, though not all drama:

Battlestar Galactica -- I didn't like the show much at all when I only saw a couple episodes out of order, but I'm glad I was bored one day and started from the beginning; IMO an awesome series. 8)

Fringe; already mentioned in the thread. It's a bit different but a great show when watched in order.

Le Femme Nakita -- from the late '90s. It may not be for everyone, but I think it's a good show. I also watched one season of the newer Nakita and like it, as well, though it's a bit different than the earlier series.

Alias -- what can I say? I like these types of shows. :D

The Walking Dead -- a great show only diminished by a horrible first part of a second season.

Dexter -- has a couple of the best seasons of any show ever IMO.

Other shows I like with at least 1 full season and possibly a movie: Of course X-Files. Also, Revenge, the Pretender, Dark Angel, Firefly, Lexx, ER, Jericho, Farscape, Dollhouse and Tru Calling (hey, I'm an Eliza Dushku fan :D), Alphas, Continuum, Eureka, Hell on Wheels, American Horror Story, Persons Unknown, Life on Mars, etc... Many good series around IMO. I also like many comedies/ British comedies and sci fi shows.

It can make a major difference watching the show from the start vs catching one or two episodes randomly.

And to me, that's the design of a shitty show. A great show should be able to capture an audience from any point.

There's obviously nothing wrong with your point of view, but some of us don't mind shows where each episode doesn't need to be very self-contained. I've sometimes avoided shows after catching a single episode or two and not liking it but then later found the overall series to be favorites.

I watched a good chunk of Alias... still not sure why I kept watching it. They killed off and resurrected so many characters it's not even funny "Oh he was dead but not REALLY dead" "But we blew him up in a massive fireball". It was kinda like Nip/Tuck - great at first and then went completely "OK, what the fuck?" yet still soldiered on for several more seasons.

Deadwood, TWD and BSG are still on my list. Every time I get to a lull in current TV shows I grab one or two of these. Hell on Wheels is filmed near here I think, I've heard it's pretty good too.

Sons of Anarchy makes me skeptical as to how this could be a serious list. Especially with the exclusion of LOST and Firefly.

But on the list Deadwood and Rome are streets ahead. Rome doesn't get enough credit, IMO.
