The Photography Thread

Post by Nolly »

Hey dudes,

I haven't seen a thread dedicated to photography yet, go ahead and link your flickr/500px/tumblr/etc.. pages, tell us a bit about your gear and show some pictures!

To kick things off, here's my Flickr page - http://www.flickr.com/photos/-nolly-/.
I shoot with a Canon 5D Mk III, 50/1.2L, 40/2.8 (pancake), 28/1.8, 24-70/2.8L, and Sigma 85/1.4.

Here are some random recent shots of mine:

So I guess no-one around here is into photography? I find that hard to believe! I got a few shots of my drummer Matt at rehearsal today, they're the first pictures I've taken in a while that I actually like.

I am. I just don't have ~$6-7K of gear yet lol. I also seem to take very few pictures I actually like :(

Currently shooting a Pentax K-R body & I have the FA-50mm 1.7, 50-200 F4-5.6, 18-55 F3.5-5.6, and the Tamron 70-200 F2.8. I lost a bunch of my finished photos in a hard drive disaster over the holidays... need to go back and retouch some raw files.

Here's my Flickr tho: http://www.flickr.com/photos/leclerce/

Really I just need to get myself in position to shoot more stuff in good light though I think, with my good lenses (ie, not the 18-55 or 50-200). I also think the raw converter I'm using (Rawtherapee on linux) does little to nothing for noise reduction which I'm not thrilled about (ACR doesn't work in Wine, neither does lightroom or something like DXO optics pro).

Ironically, probably the best two shots on there right now were taken with a point & shoot before I knew anything about photography composition, technique or otherwise:

If I were the head of marketing at Meinl I'd pay to use that close up of the two cymbals in an advert.

Here are a few from a mountaineering trip I did a couple years ago. Shot with a cheap point-and-shoot camera. Will post more if anybody wants to see them

Grabbed a new lens yesterday. It's a Sigma 170-500mm F4.5-6.7. Obviously it's not going to match a 600mm or 800mm prime, but on my APS-C body it's 750mm equivalent and it was $290 versus thousands or even tens of thousands for any prime that long. Seems pretty sharp at 500mm from what I've seen so far as well. It's about the same size/weight as my Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 too. :)

One of the guitarists in my band needed a promotional picture with his new Ibanez guitar and asked me if I could do the honours. I had him set up next to a window backstage at the Annandale in Sydney, against a wall papered with Asian newspapers. Pretty happy with the results given the ghetto setup!

Schweet pic. I really like that guitar, it'd be a lot nice without a 'rose though.

What camera settings/lighting did you use for the BW one where he was biting his shirt?
