including a theme song in band's set

Post by overdrivenel34s »

What are your thoughts on occasionally randomly including a theme song (such as tv show theme song) in to your bands set? If you did or would, what song(s) did/would you play? I think it would be fun to do and also provide added entertainment value to the audience especially with it being totally unexpected.

Sort of as a similar concept back when cdr's were the rage, i'd sometime make a cd with mix of songs to give a friend and would throw something like the "price is right theme" song in middle and not tell them. :D

The "serious" musicians in the band will disapprove mightily.
Tell them to sod off.

I think there's two ways to do it -
1: pick a song that is already close to your style, it's probably immediately recognizable, and could be a fun time.
2: pick a well-known theme song, but play it completely in your style (metal?) - make it rock - it may take the crowd most of the song to recognize it - if they even do.

Funny you mention this, we were just working on a cover of Taxman to work into our set last week and a series of jokes evolved into us now segueing it into the Batman theme song.

We played a Halloween gig and played the Munsters & Addams family theme songs, which surprisingly went over well, seemed to fit the occasion.

I saw a band cover the power rangers theme tune and they replaced every instance of power rangers with anal soda. It was the best song of their set.

We used to open with a mash-up of the Spy Hunter theme and the 007 theme.

My first band back in high school covered the Laverne & Shirley theme song. It has a total 50s vibe already, so playing it with distortion and barre chords just made it sound like a Ramones song. It went over gangbusters.

And between "schlemiel," "schlemazel," and "hasenpfeffer incorporated," it led to me knowing way more Yiddish/German vocabulary than any 15 year old in Maryland had any right to know...

I want to use the 007 theme as an opener. It's great fun to play.

Believer used to break into the Munsters theme mid set live. It was awesome for the audience. Everybody there, fan or not, recognized that song. It really pulled in people that were stand-offish up to that point. THAT'S the point to make to the SRS BZNS guys that don't wanna do it.
