Heil PR30. Hey Glenn Fricker it’s you who sUx not the gear!!

Post by EndTime »

Hopefully he searches himself. Cause at some point he needs to be exposed for not having anywhere near the recording and mixing skills he professes. Actually what do I care? But I remember one time he made a vid saying there is one piece of gear that is so shitty it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get good recordings from it. And that was the original PV 5150 cab and speakers. Welp. That’s the cab I used here. I’ve always been able to get recordings that can be cool from it. I used to think it was maybe a bit more difficult to find the right mic positions, but this was literally put up, checked it out and I’m like “That’ll do”. So first blind placement and this is what I get..

Using my 5153 el34 100 watt blue channel boosted with a Wampler Moxie pedal.

I used Orion andPiece by Piece by Slayer. One, they were loaded Into the same project and they are different enough to judge some things. Oh, also I grabbed that B stock Heil pr30 mic Raf posted about. It’s cool, not sure how much I’ll use it by itself as it’s a little smooth on certain speakers but for the Sheffield 1200 speakers I felt it would be a good match.

Also on this Orion clip I accidentally muted the lead/melody guitars. Whatver. But just 2 guitar tracks. Used my old PV Wolfgang with stock pickups

For Piece by Piece, I used my Warmoth V loaded with 81/85 at 18 volts. All other gear the same.

I stopped following him so long ago I actually forgot his name recently. But I remember this vid and it’s funny how little success he had with getting tones from this cab/speakers and I honestly believ given alm the tools available to an engineer or mixer, I can literally make just about anything work good enough, and I’m just a “home” producer. So I just found it sad he blamed this piece of gear as being impossible to get a good tone from. So , here it is. Hopefully he shows up!

ha! Nice you grabbed one. I love those mics. The first Faces of Many EP had that an a 57 on it.

Both sound great. I can see what you mean about the smoothness. They do seem to balance the Sheffields a bit, but these don't have that same level of aggression that your stuff normally has.

But anyway, I've found that mic to work well on kick, snare, really great on toms, used a pair of them as OHs one time, even. Pretty good all arounder.

Yeah it’s a little smooth across the midrange. I would want a bit more grit there but this is the first shit I recorded with em. So I’m sure I’ll make some use with it. Maybe to use with a 57 to get a little of grit and smoothness. I could certainly see that working

He is a special kinda guy. I commented that "if you can't hear the difference after a tube change, it's on you". Sometimes the change isn't 100% positive, but there is a change.
I agree with him that there's a bigger change after a speaker swap, though.

He started spouting that he had evidence, and where was my evidence. Sure, Glenn, I've done an A/B-recording test after each tube change I've done the last 30 years..NOT!
But hey, he has a YT channel, and I don't :D

lolol

That's his whole thing. I have evidence, you don't so fuck off. So fucking stupid. Pickups don't matter. Tubes don't matter. Wood doesn't matter. Hell he even recently started saying strats and LPs sound the same. It's complete insanity lol. Then he complains that he's pissing off the internet and saving his viewers money lol.

The clips sound great by the way. I'd agree it's smoother, your tones usually a bit more bite, but this is great nonetheless.

I've always liked the original 5150 cabs, especially when paired with the matching heads.
My first experience hearing a 5150 back in the 90s was trying out the half stack at a friend's practice and I was super impressed with it. Never thought the cab wasn't good.

On the other hand, I've never heard anything Fricker produced that sounded good. His stuff sounds home made and he has an actual studio. He's never actually produced anything of notice either. This is a guy who got YouTube recognition by yelling at the camera and doing "old man yelling at the clouds/angry uncle" act. Literally a comedy act. Which can be funny sometimes but doesn't make him an actual specialist on anything.

YouTube is full of guys like that. They don't gig, produce or play at any serious level and yet they're out there giving gear advice for 1000s of people. It's the blind guiding the blind lol

If Bob Rock, Michael Wagener, Andy Sneap etc have an opinion about production I'm all ears. But Glenn Fricker? Show me ONE awesome sounding, acclaimed album he produced. There aren't any.

Also, I've learned a lot more about recording from you (EndTime) than from Fricker. By far.

Your stuff actually sounds great, and ultimately that's the basis to decide if anyone's advice is worth listening to.

That's how I hear it too. The clarity and the way the chords ring out on Orion, kick ass!
