A friend of mine passed

Post by greatmutah »

Just got the news this morning from another friend. I had a group of friends in High School that I'm still friends with today. Half of us were in a band together and the other half hung out regardless and BS'ed, played cards, video games, whatever. We did a bunch of dumb shit together and all grew up together. While I have a sister (and my sister is awesome) these guys were the closest thing I could have ever had to brothers. So, one of them passed away. His sister reached out to another one of our friends in the group and told him and he told us. He had a heart condition, which I vaguely remember him mentioning back when we were in middle school/high school. His sister and dad think it may have been a heart attack or aortic aneurysm. Whatever it was, he went quickly. It's been a couple years since I've seen him. Last time was at our friend Rich's place before covid hit and 4 of us out of the 6 were hanging out playing cards, listening to metal and having some beers. And funnily enough, it had been a few years since the last time I'd seen him too. But you'd never know it. Any time any of us got together as a group, it's like nothing had changed (even though everything really had). We were all aware of each other's situations and lives and what was going on, but we still joked, carried on and roasted each other like we always had. I assume there's gonna be some kind of memorial that I'll attend/go to. I knew he'd been dealing with some depression issues lately so when I got the news I was hoping it wasn't anything related to that, and while this still isn't good by any means, I'm a little relieved in a small way. He's 9 months older than me. Fuck. I was hoping to play some cards with these guys soon. Sucks that I now know for sure he won't be there. I'm pretty sure my other brothers all feel the same way.

Thanks all. I’m sure we’ll get together in some capacity soon. Just been thinking a lot of all the dumb shit we all used to do together. Getting old sucks.

Sorry to hear, man. I lost my best friend in 2007 pretty much the same way. However, they didn't know he had a heart condition. He had a heart attack at 25 y/o in the army.

Prayers, man.

Thanks all. It’s a little more rough today. Been talking to another friend who was closer to him and sharing some good memories which has been good but also tough.

The memorial service was today. It was good. Saw everyone from our group. Told a few stories to his family. A lot of laughs were shared. Some tears too. Still sucks. But… it is what it is at this point.

I went to my old drummers funeral Saturday. We went to high school together and were real tight for a couple of years before I got married. I lived at his house on the weekends for a bit, and his parents were cool. We hadn’t talked much in the last 20 years though. He had just gotten chemo for lymphoma, and caught covid right after. He couldn’t shake the rona.
