Flat Tire

Post by IndyWS6 »

I cut down the right front going into 3 on Tuesday. First time this old man has had to whip out and jack in a parking lot in a long time, but I digress... Two things. First: Belle Tire fixed me up and replaced the tire under warranty since it could not be repaired. The cost to put the warranty on the new tire was $32 (reasonable enough), but the tax was $16. DAFUQ? 50%? Second: The spare tire (full size - thank you Jeep) is a Kumho brand. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but the translation there is really unfortunate...

Lucky you have a spare tire. New cars are coming with the tire jelly and a DC air pump. When I bought my KIA last summer I would not close the deal until he threw in a real spare tire. The Hybrids don't even have a place to put a spare tire

I always pay for the road hazard warranty when I buy new tires. Sure, it adds a $100 to the price. But it is very cheap insurance if something happens. I clipped a curb years ago and ripped a chunk out of the sidewall. Took the wheel to Townfair and they replaced it no questions asked. Just had to pay for mounting and balancing.

It is absolutely worth it to me.

Last Saturday morning, I saw that my right rear tire was flat, really flat. A quick inspection showed it had a nail in it. I tried to pump it up with my tire inflator, to no avail. I couldn't remember where the jack is in the F-150, so I grabbed the jack from my wife's Outback. There weren't a lot of spots for the jack to go for the rear, but I made do. I get the tire up and I go to lower the spare. Houston, we have a problem. My spare is not there. I get under to look and someone has cut the wires that lower the spare and taking the whole assembly. I had no idea that this was thing. My F-150 came with almost a full size spare and a rim that matches my other 4, which were and upgrade from stock. It is going to cost $1100 to replace. I filed an insurance claim last week. There are a lot of dirtbags in this world, and a lot of them live in Florida. (I had it towed on a flatbed to Mavis and put 4 new Continental TerrainContact A/T tires on it. These tires look badass. I kept one of the old for a spare, but I'm not sure it's going to fit.)

The spare tire brand was probably started by my ex-wife.

As for the flat, when you were driving with the flat you could have used the opportunity to write a blues song.

That sucks, dude. I never thought about spare tire thefts, but people steal catalytic converters, so nothing is off-limits for thieves.

If I was you, I'd make sure that the spare fits and you have all of the needed tools (jack, lug wrench, etc.). Changing a tire on the side of the road, even in the best circumstances, sucks. Needing to tow your vehicle because you don't have that stuff tools is worse. And costly...

P.S. On a related note, Jeep does a great job of packaging the tire and tools inside of the Grand Cherokee...

That sucks, i hate flat tires. Why tires aren't generally way more resistant to becoming flat in 1st place is something ive wondered about... Run flat tires seems like band aid type solution. Why not focus more on preventing the tires from becoming flat in 1st place vs just making it able to drive a little while lower speeds after getting a flat.

I've researched and found products like in this video but am a bit hesitant as i don't want to mess with the tire balancing, seems like a pain to install and it may not even work...Though i may just take a chance one of these days.

My Mini came with run flat tires and a small, donut spare tire.
Run flat tires are a great "concept" because, it allows you to driver further when you get a flat, but...
I've owned three different brands; Continental came with the car, Firestone and Bridgestones. They all got seriously cupped (low spots) after hitting potholes.
Once you hit 20 mph, cupped tires start making noise. On the highway, they are loud as fuck.

There are always new potholes on my 33 mile ride to work and you have to hit them a few times before you remember where they are.
My latest set, Bridgestones, got cupped within a month and the treads still have about 40K miles to go... so, I just have to turn the radio up louder until it's time for a new set of tires.
The next set of tires won't be run flats.

Ever have tire with slow leak issue? That can also be a pain. Last year i had a tire keep losing air. Where after a week would be almost flat. I brought it to shop near me who spent lot of time checking over and couldnt find any evidence of any sort of leak. The issue continued. Brought it in 2nd time and same deal. 3rd time i brought it insisting there has to be something wrong. They then found the issue there was a tiny nail and was also very slight bead leak too. They fixed it and its been good ever since. How they missed the issue the 1st two times is beyond me...

It seems like if any tire manufacturer were to release tire series made widely available is common sizes that's immune or at least way more resistant to flats/punctures, leaks while maintaining good performance and not being noisy (since run flats have can have that issue) it would give them massive advantage over their competitors.

That seriously blows. I managed to limp into a parking lot where it was relatively safe. Side of the road stuff is dangerous AF...

Yeah. It also didn't help that Kimberly decided to "assist" with the tire change and was standing by my side talking nonstop.

I have had a few people up here(RI) tell me that in a similar situation they called the state police who sent a car over to sit behind them with the flashers on.

Man, fuck flat tires so hard. Was driving in to the hospital in the middle of the night for an emergency and it was pissing down rain. Hit one of our glorious Houston potholes and fucking shredded my front passenger side tire. Had to limp it to the garage. Nothing like waking up in the middle of the night to a pager then working all day only to have to change your tire before you can go home.

So... I just got an email from Belle Tire to inform me that one of the associates at the store on the day I picked-up my repaired tire tested positive for COVID. They aren't saying I was in direct contact with the person - but they aren't saying I wasn't. "I should take all necessary precautions...". They apparently found out shortly after I left that day and closed the store to sanitize it. Great...

I was wearing my mask, so I'm not overly concerned, but I guess I'll try to be extra-vigilant with my efforts to avoid getting or spreading the Zombie Plague. I get my second shot on Saturday. If I get sick and die from it before then, I swear to God I will haunt that fucking place for eternity

With the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines they are reporting 69- (nice) to 85% efficacy after the first dose according to the barrage of crap I see at work. Between that, a mask and hopefully indirect contact I’d be optimistic you avoided that garbage man.
