First tapper was Paganini with his bow. First on guitar was either Jimmie Webster, Merle Travis, George van Eps or Tal Farlow who were all tapping by 1952 when Jimmie Webster wrote a book about it. First rock guitarist was either Harvey Mandel or Jeff Beck around 1965. George Lynch and EVH went to see Mandel in Canned Heat together and they both started tapping after that.
