Saw Slayer last night. Spoiler alert for NFA

Post by JiveTurkey »

Wife and I went to the local-ish concert event center (oddly enough, the TaxSlayer center :cop:   ) last night and saw Slayer's final (air quotes perhaps implied?) show. Ramblings commencing now.

Place was PACKED. Like ridiculously so. I was glad to see people out in droves for this show. I would say it was teetering close to capacity. Which was cool to see.

Phil and the Illegals were first. Doing a set of Pantera covers. Oddly enough; this was the band I had the most emotional reaction to the entire night and I am not sure why? Phil didn't pander as far as playing the Pantera never reconciled sympathy card. So not sure what it was. But the band was good. Emulating what Dime and Vinnie did is not near as easy as anyone might think. And they pulled it off for the most part with ease. Only thing that might be a little lacking if anything was the soloing. The guys were hitting the notes and bits they needed to; but even my on/off jaded against Pantera at times a$$ knows you can't f**k with Dime  :rawk:

Ministry was next. I was actually looking forward to them the most. They played basically their greatest "hits" from the Land of R@pe and Honey through Psalm 69. While I love this era on record (and I even dig Revenge  :lash: ); they fell strangely flat to me. It was cool; don't get me wrong. But the one dimensional jackhammer thing was pretty limited in appeal after about 4,5 songs.

Up next , Primus. Trippy, jammy while playing stuff from a decent swath of their catalog. Visual treat and in my mind; like what Tool would be like live if they wrote songs I liked and I didn't absolutely loathe them  Excellent rhythm section. LaLonde for me is the absolute weak link. Good player. I think. But most of his guitar lines sound designed to be as irritating as possible. So they live and die on the drum and bass grooves. Only complaint I have with them in this setting was they didn't play Tommy the Cat or Winona. I get it as they probably wanted to appear "cerebral" since they wouldn't be competing in the heaviness category. But those songs would have killed this audience. Play the "hits" FFS, even if they are a novelety. Would have went over gangbusters with the crowd on hand :idk: Good performance though, and much better than I expected.

Slayer. Ahhh. Slayer is Slayer. If you know them; you know them.

Random complaints:
1. Kerry King, despite what he thinks; is not the only person in the band. Since Gary Holt can wipe the floor with him in his sleep on pretty much every front; maybe you could, you know; allow him some room in the f**king mix?

2. Kerry King's bro-lift-vape-tribal-half-pint thing is beyond old.

3. Kerry King (and Slayer in general) tuned down drives me nuts. Kings tone in B or C# sounds like absolute edgeless bloated a$$hole. I LOATHE this era pretty much universally and to say I hate King's tone tuned down is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge understatment. The worst sort of fat-ness you could ever imagine

Other than that  they were very good. Araya did great and I was surprised to see Bostaph keeping up. He is a tech wizard to me, but for Forbidden and not Slayer. There's only one Lombardo, bro :cop: He got a little off time and clunky in spots; but did the material justice. First 1/3 was heavy on the "newer" material. Then a little shift into drop tuned crap then a bigggggggggggggg glut of the old school. Stage show was excellent. Great light show and the fire. THE FIRE

We headed out a smidge early before the last song (Angel of Death) because it wasn't Lombardo and because 20000 people leaving a single parking lot. Made great time getting home too

Cool little side note: Jack Owens (Cannibal Corpse/Deicide) was for some reason at this show. He did an in store at a local record shop that I missed but I saw him walking through the food and vendor area and stalked him out for a second. My wife was like "why are you introducing yourself to this regular dude in the beer line?"

The number of times I've been asked that.

So the typical current Slayer mix, dialing Gary back as much as possible? Damn it!

Not sure what the audio sitch is gonna be in the suite we're in as supposedly we're behind sound proof glass. Maybe they'll let us fuck with the balance side to side to get things a little more even? :idk:

I gotta say, I'm not looking forward to Phil at all. I'm a huge Pantera fan, but Phil's current schtick has really grated on my nerves. But maybe there's more there than it seems on the surface.

Not sure how I feel about seeing Ministry or Primus. I know them, and while I'd love to see Primus on one of their headliners like they had at the little local place a few weeks back, in this environment I'm just not sure. Ministry I like, but is more a small doses band for me these days.

I haven't enjoyed a single recording of a live Slayer show since Jeff's been gone. Kerry's tone isn't great on its own, and he won't ever let Gary get enough volume to fill it out. So that'll be a joygasm.
Guess I'll just have to drown myself in the free wet bar and hope for the best. Gonna be really weird not being on the floor and trying to hold myself upright at a show like this. Really, really weird. But free is free. :idk:

My breakdown was definitely me over-analyzing things  It was a great show overall. I've seen everyone other than Phil's band on the bill a number of times. Ministry and Primus both in their heydays. Sounds like we are on the same page, Ministry wise. Their aggression is awesome in recorded form but it is a little too one note for me live. Still a good show though.

The since Jeff has been gone thing is a very good point. I am always understanding when bands need to carry on without members. I get it, even if it sucks for the audience sometimes. There was an inherent, um; danger with the original Slayer lineup that just doesn't exist in any other form for them. I LOVE Holt and Bostaph but Slayer is the original 4. Maybe it's tied to my nostalgia from back in the day. That's certainly a possibility. These quibbles aside; I think you'll dig it.

The suites are the suites. They don't dismantle them every time a concert rolls into town. And they have to be built up to nuclear shelter standards to keep the riff-raff from interacting with the "important" people at sporting events.

If it weren't free, I wouldn't ever see the inside of one of those suites. Ain't no way I'd funnel even more money into Denny Sanford's pockets. Especially not for a metal show where I'd rather be on the floor.

There is something to be said about the danger of the original Slayer lineup. There was a huge energy to them that just can't be recaptured with any other lineup. I'm sure I'll still enjoy the spectacle.

I remember when they built this place, which wasn't very long ago, there were legit conversations about bullet proofing the VIP sections in case of shootings. I mean, who gives a fuck about the commoners, but the VIP areas? :cop: :cop: :cop:

Granted, there are several open-air VIP sections off-center and in the corners. Maybe I'll luck out and get one of those? :idk: If so, hope it's on Gary's side.

I saw Primus open for Tool last year. They were excellent. Not nearly as good as Tool, but still excellent...

Here’s a fact about Slayer.. they are always good live. Literally. They always fucking sound good. Sometimes great. But but maybe not always great, But always good. Plus they are bringing out out all the pyro this time. they are going out on a high for this tour. No one should be disappointed going to see Slayer

My thoughts on Kerry aside; yes. Stage show, light show and pyro were awesome.

Holy.

Fucking.

SHIT.

OK, so I lucked out and got into one of the open air suites about three quarters of the way back from the stage on Gary's side of the arena.

Phil and the Pantera run was actually shockingly good. Was it Pantera? No. Was it good? Fuck yeah. When he said they decided to try something special for our town since we were so kind to come out early (they started the show ten minutes earlier than ticket time and ticket time was 6 PM), I was braced. Then they blew out Sandblasted Skin. Gat damn. His guitarists are on point.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Ministry. It is sorta as the esteemed JT said, the jackhammer thing gets a bit much after a few songs, but they didn't completely overstay their welcome. I'm glad I saw 'em.

At some point mid Ministry's set some little blonde gal in the pit lost her shirt and then decided that was the perfect opportunity to start laying into the dudes full-chest-forward. Most of the dudes ended up cowering away from her as she's standing there arms up breasts forward screaming, "COME ON!" at everybody.

Primus is an odd match on this particular bill, but what the fuck. They brought it. Gat damn did they bring it. So happy to have finally caught them, even if it was a weirdo time-slot.

And Slayer. Fuck me. I ain't gonna lodge a complaint about any thing other than the balance. I was happy we were on Gary's side because even so when he was playing a lead all you heard was rhythm and Kerry was playing a lead you barely heard the slightest rhythm under him. That balance is bonkers, bros.

That said, fuck me. What a show. Pyro, pyro, and more pyro. Even from where we were you'd get blasted with the heat every once in a while. Can't imagine what that feels like from the stage. And the set dressing changes between songs. And the damn lighting effects. Jezus fuck.

And afterwards, Tom stayed out pointing at people as the stage started to be tore down. And before they ushered him off he grabbed the mic one last time and said, "Thank you for being part of my life. I'll miss you all." And gave a little bow and wave.

The suite was nice, and we had some little gal ushering us beers, whiskys, nachos, pretzels and burgers all night, so by the time we got to Seasons in the Abyss I was feeling pretty good. I'm still thinking I would have preferred the floor for something like this, but for an old fuck like me this wasn't a horrible option. Tough to argue with free.

BTW, Kerry's new guitar is hideous even from a distance.

The dude that showed up late in the first set drunk out of his mind and babbling about how that rando up there singing pantera covers wasn't bad needs a good swift cunt punch. Both for that and for running up in front of us every time Slayer started a new tune until he felt too pukey to stand. Hold it like a man or GTFO. The waitress/hostess was happy when he and his bros left early.

All in all, a great night. I need about another half gallon of water and then I'm good to get some sleep. Gonna be weird waking up with nothing but a mild hangover after a show like that, as opposed to the usual bruises, stiffness, unable to move without pain routine. Huh. Maybe there's something to this executive suite nonsense?

Dude that got the tickets is a bass player and worships at Les's feet. It is funny though. I was sitting in the company president's marked seat, he was sitting in the president's wife's seat.

After reflecting, a couple comments:
A) I never need to hear a count-off be "One, two, fuck you" again after Philsy busted it out something like six times.

B) Kerry King's stance during leads, which I'm sure looks intimidating from the floor, from our vantage made him look like the Angry Imp. Which I found far too amusing after a few beers.

C) I checked Saturday morning and there were several vids on youtube of the show either from our suite or the one right to the left of us. Lots of others too, I just find it funny I can almost piece the whole show back together by following vids on youtube. Don't really know if that's a good thing or not.

D) Being up in the suites I felt a little disconnected from the show. Weird vibe at a metal show.

I'm glad I went, and it was definitely an experience. Good times.

I'm usually either a barricade guy or a swinging through the pit guy, so being separated from the action, calm as it seemed to be Friday night, was really weird.

As to your last point, I wonder how many subgenres of metal shot off of Slayer. Without them I doubt death metal or hardcore would have climbed to any recognizable form we have today. Right there is a huge number of subgenres branching off in every direction.
