To me there's nothing "heavier" than Meshuggah.
I literally can’t even imagine what something would have to sound like to make Meshuggah sound “soft” in comparison.

Ya that's a good one. The faster stuff doesn't sound as heavy and evil to me but there is no mistaking Meshuggah as soft.

Re: The heaviest band you know?!?
[It’s tough to single out a band. I haven’t found a band that’s consistently “the” heaviest. But albums or songs definitely .
Album- Crowbar “Odd Fellows Rest” came acrosss as the heaviest shit I’ve ever heard back in 98 or whenever. Haven’t found much that topped that record. Punishing album

This song is pretty fucking heavy for essentially using 2 notes Lol

That “Thou” track musically sounds a lot like Pallbearer. Not sure who came first but that almost sounded like a direct copy of a pallbearer track until the black metal vox. Lol.

I always thought of Pallbearer as like the pop band of the stoner world. T hey remind me of Torche. Link me to the Pallbearer track you're talking about!

Re: The heaviest band you know?!?
I think heavy bands that take themselves too seriously are kinda funny...and ironically, bands that don't take the heavy schtick seriously can be maniacally and hilariously brutal.
Heavy means different things to different people, I know.
The two heaviest things I've ever heard, to my ears are:
SYL: Specifically OMFG or Shitstorm
Infant Annihilator: Decapitation Fornication
All three of these songs just make me laugh because they're so insane.

When I saw Neurosis open for Pantera in 1995. That. Was. HEAVY.
It was right when Through Silver in Blood came out. They played Locust Star, and it was fucking LOUD.
As much as I love Pantera, Neurosis made just as big of an impact on me that night.

Re: The heaviest band you know?!?
I agree with Fretless at the idea that “heavy” is a feeling or vibe. But cmon, Beach Boys? Heavy these days is generally referring to morebrutal music.
And that’s exactly why I hear Infant Annihilator, cause it’s been posted, and don’t hear anything heavy about it. It’s just an anecdote to make a “heavy” sound. But there isn’t anything heavy from the soul so to speak. Some may like the comic side of it, but it’s not sincere to me.
That’s why, in general, heavy music has taken a step back because what’s perceived as heavy is people upping the “formula”.It goes from the excessive downtuning because it all started with “b standard” bands sounded heavier. But they tuned there because that’s what their sound led them to initially. So many just took that and went even lower to be *heavier*. The flip side is the bands going faster. Now the speeds that are synthetically realized with drum editing etc, isn’t more brutal. It’s just video game music. It used to be faster faster l, sicker sicker! But it’s topped out, and so much of it is just mindless speed and/or wankery. the actual content of “heavy” riffs and ideas will hopefully start taking precedence again. Plus don’t get me started on another part of the formula which is everyone using the same drum samples, or amp sims, etc etc. I honestly hate when I get too many comments about sounding like someone else. I DONT want someone else’s tone. Blah blah. I’ll stop. Lol
Telephant, I can’t tell you offhand which Pallbearer I’m speaking of. But definitely sumthin off their 1st 5 song album. “Sorrow and Extinction “ I think. I do like that record and you could feel the depression of their sound. But I haven’t been able to get into anything of theirs since

Good Vibes Dude it's a master piece and based on my idea of heavy which you just agreed on it is , to me . But that's ok this isn't a debate it's a post what you think is heavy . I could go on all day but I just wanted to get a few things in that where outside of the Heavy metal thing I knew would get posted .

A lot of great stuff in here. Loop, you pointed out one of my favorite SYL tracks - Shitstorm. It’s in the comically heavy vein but it’s so fucking well composed to boot.
I think Pantera’s Great Southern Trendkill holds a top spot for me album wise and if we’re gonna go to specific songs, it’s Underground in America/Sandblasted Skin. That low as FUCK F# tuning just sounds disgusting on those two.

Also I’m a bit crowbar fan too... and in that vein the first Kingdom of Sorrow album is a favorite. Buried in Black was fucking killer. But then again Kirk Windstein always brings the brutality.
