100 years since World War I

Post by Noah »

Frikkin horrifying.

also, Macron was dumb for praising Petain.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ww1- ... SKCN1NC1OC

Leaving aside his deplorable behavior during WWII, I disagree that Petain was ever any good to anyone.

He was just not that good of a general. He blundered right into Falkenhayn's trap at Verdun, sending hundreds of thousands of men into a place where they were at a strategic disadvantage, supplied by just one road. He ruthlessly put down a mutiny in the French army by hanging a bunch of men and promising not to launch so many suicidal attacks and offering better leave conditions. He continued to suck all the way into summer 1918 when finally the USA bailed him out. Hooray for him?

anyway one hundred years since that godawful mess, and people still don't get it. Discuss.

The very idea of trench warfare is horrifying. Those were some real men sacrificed for basically nothing.

I'm a bit of a war history buff, as horrible and brutal as it was/is, can't help but find it fascinating. And yes, WW1 is as horrifying as it got. Mind blowing in most regards

Churchill's idea for Gallipoli was pretty good. Great Britain had a whole bunch of second-rate aging battleships not good for much. Sacrifice machines instead of men, and maybe take Turkey out of the war. Even the amphibious invasions weren't totally crackhead. It was kind of a fluke thing that they didn't work. That Gallipoli movie just didn't get it.

This thread gave me an reason to scan my Grandfather's WWI photos. They were the last of my family's photos that needed scanning for our digital album.
He was an artilleryman in the British Army.

For most of history ,French culture was breed like rabbits until the people are starving then come up with a lame excuse for a war that kills off a large part of populace. Make peace without hurting the ruling class and start all over again.

Crazy times.... many people don't know that the Germans dropped firebombs on London, from zeppelins flown across the English Channel.
I've read a lot of books about WWII, Viet Nam and the Cold War but, Rommel's autobiography was the only WWI book that I read.

Any suggestion for a good WWI book?

And the Rothschilds made a fortune by financing both sides of every war.

After the French Revolution, the economy was in tatters and the new French Republican Government was running out of money.
The poor French economy was the reason for start of the Napoleonic Wars.
The French Politicians were worried about losing their heads (like the monarchy) so, they sent Napoleon to conquer Italy.
Napoleon destroyed the Italian Army and the French Government extorted money from the Italian Government; you give us money and we'll let you stay in charge of Italy.
They stole money from every country they took over, allowing the French Politicians to keep their heads.

The First World War by John Keegan - the best overview. Keegan was a first rate historian who used clear elegant prose. A pleasure to read.
Gallipoli by Alan Moorehead - The classic that spawned all the Gallipoli mania.
The Burning of the World: A Memoir of 1914 by Bela Zombory-Moldovan - A recently published firsthand account from an Austro-Hungarian soldier.

Peter Jackson recently put out a documentary, using restored pics & film. It was funded by the BBC, and debuted in England. Been going it'd make its way over here.

I was just gonna say that. Basically 30 hours of how horrible humans can be to each other, beautifully narrated by Dan, & packed with (haunting) personal stories.

Here's a photo that was posted on Dan Carlin's twitter yesterday - it's a battalion from the Cameron Highlanders (top) in 1914 before deployment to the front and (bottom) in 1918 after the armistice.
