intermittent fasting
I dunno, but it kinda works for me. I started this around July and do this a few times a week. I've also supplemented this with spiritied walks through the local university campus with my wife two or three times a week, and I'm down a notch on my belt. When I drive, I don't feel my titties and gutt bouncing around when I go over bumps.
These days, I can better tell the difference between being hungry versus craving for something. I usually crave more than I am hungry. Feeling hungry was so foreign to me when I used to eat to stay full. Now I'm kinda at the opposite end where I eat only when I'm hungry.
I poked around the interwebs and what I do is called the 16/8: 16 hours of no food, and an 8-hour window of eating. Sometimes I can pull off an 18/6. One of these days I'm going to challenge myself to a full 24 hours of fasting. The only thing that worries me about this is my breath kicking.
If anything, this has been transforming my perspective on food and eating habits. I'm more aware of starches/carbs and sugar consumption. As with a lot of things, I'm finding a lot of this has to do with the mind.
Other than feeling hungry at work, which I often forget when it's really busy, I don't suffer much. I would like to say that I still eat whatever I want, but again, being more aware of carbs and sugars, what I want to eat has changed a bit.
Just thought I'd share.

Re: intermittent fasting
hmmmmmm - normally I only eat between 10AM and 7PM - so what is that, 15-9?
Unless you include beer/drinking - then extend that stop time.

Re: intermittent fasting
I read recently about how studies are saying that intermittent fasting is related to longer life spans. I've kinda always done this as a matter of natural habit. Generally speaking I don't eat breakfast, get really hungry around 11am, eat, then don't eat again until late in the evening, sometimes not until 10pm or later or even not until the next morning. Sometimes I'm a healthy eater in that dynamic and sometimes I eat like shit. I'm definitely fat because beer though. Almost everyday it's a 6 pack. I do feel great though since I quit cigarettes about 5 years ago. It was an almost 30 year habit and I felt like shit all the time until I quit. Didn't even realize quite how bad I felt until then.

Re: intermittent fasting
I’ve been wanting to try it, but of course I’m afraid of what I imagine the effort involved will be. Your description of your experience is very encouraging to me, though — thanks for posting!

Good on you sir!
Go for the 24 hours you’ll be surprised.
I do a 3 day fast 2-4 times a year. Longest I’ve done is 5 days. Only recommend doing something like that after doing research though.
Check out Dr Satchin Panda if you want to learn more about the health benefits.
Keep in mind anything that isn’t water is breaking the fast metabolically speaking.

Re: intermittent fasting
on the flipside a few years ago when the Mrs wanted to lose some weight she went to a nutritionist that works in the same spa as her and she put her on this diet that had her eating small amounts of specific types of food 5 times a day.... worked REALLY well... what was cool about the diet was that the document was like, 25 pages long but the first 5 were the instructions for meal planning etc the other 20 pages were recipes... I wanted to try it but my work schedule made it next to impossible to be any where close to consistent with it

Re: intermittent fasting
I have to lose a few. I'm in the process of getting in to ketosis. I figured this diet would suck because I have a sweet tooth and my wife loves carbs (she can eat whatever she wants and never be obviously fat) but I'm on day 4 and have been eating eggs, meat, and cheese. It's really not the worst. Once I adapt, I'm going to do IF, as well, until I reach my fat loss goal.
THEN IT'S FUCKING BULKING SEASON!!!

Funny you post this, theres not faster route to ketosis than a good fast.
2.5 days fasted then straight into ketogenic diet gets me deep into ketosis.

Re: intermittent fasting
I fast often. Not as weight loss, or anything other than we eat too fucking much. Even myself, who's weighed virtually the same since I was 20 (165lbs). I'm 40 now.
But digestion takes up a majority of your energy during the day . So intermittent fasting is a good way to gain some energy I've found. And is basically how I live my life on the regular..
On the flip side, the idea of eating small meals throughout the day was a huge downside on my energy. Again, perhaps there some weight loss doing so, but you are still keeping your body in constant digestion mode. Which I find made me feel worse.
I've gone 11 days on a water fast about 10 years ago and it was a very profound experience. You enter a different state around day 7.. I won't say it was hallucinogenic in any way. Cause I had none. But having took a lot of LSD in my younger years, i really felt like it tapped into similar parts of the brain perhaps. I felt extremely connected to everything and my senses were sharpened. Definitely saw things thru a different mind with that.
Recently I completed 4 days due to a health flare up, which in my case, fasting has proven to shorten its side effects and duration. And it did exactly that

A coworker took a vacation so he could fast for 9 days.
He stopped by to pickup his paycheck, on Friday, after fasting for 7 days.
He said he had started hallucinating!

I didn't hallucinate. But it's weird. It does put you kinda in that state of mind where hallucinations happen

I prefer the kind of hallucinations that you get with windowpane.
I never fasted more then one day... and that was prep for a colonoscopy!
But, I try to avoid junk food and rarely eat enough to feel stuffed.

Maybe I should start with goals like that, before attempting to go completely without food, lol!

Re: intermittent fasting
Ever notice how people go on a diet, and they drop pounds, but inevitably gain the weight back? Our weight, like every other metabolic factor in our body, is managed by hormones, specifically insulin. Our body has a "setpoint" that it tries to equilibrate to, and that setpoint is determined by our level of insulin being produced and by insulin resistance. The only way I know of to reset that setpoint is fasting.
Granted, this is a very simplified explanation, but this is the gist of it. Good luck, Bonano. You might go to be hungry, or have a hangry morning here and there, but just know that this is you breaking that insulin resistance cycle and you will drop weight!

This is going to be an interesting video series. Only one episode so far.
BTW
Norton actually has an education related to the topic compared to a lot of other youtubers.

Re: intermittent fasting
My dieting habits get better and better as time goes on. I don't fast or diet because I'll probably never really need to. I'm 35 and I still have the metabolism of an 18 year old. But what matters to me is overall health and feeling of well being.
It's a process that started around age 18 when I just decided that I wasn't going to eat fast food anymore. Little by little I pay more and more attention to how I feel after eating certain foods. My son's dairy allergy has helped how I feel a lot because we have several alternatives in the house for dairy foods (non-soy... no soyboys in my house) and it turns out that not eating much dairy in solidarity with my son has really helped how I feel. Especially the whey protein. I switched to a plant based protein and god damn do I feel better.

Yeah, I guess thankfully, I never eat things to diet or lose weight, but to maintain energy and "well-being". I stay active at work, home and whatever. The biggest downer for me is when I don't have the energy. Or worse, when the food you eat slows you down..
But in regards to whey protein. I've found some would just slow me down and cause other issues. But there are a few that work well for me. I've tried plant based and a good whey protein still works better for me. But there is so many whey proteins out there, it is almost by trial and error to find the ones best for you. But there are some things added in most that I find to be the problem more than the actual whey

If you want something without a lot of additives I like this one in the unflavored. The flavored ones have a lot of junk additives. They do a lot of sales so if you catch it right and buy a larger bag you also get free shipping so it works out to be pretty cheap compared to most store bought brands. Obviously pretty bland though!
https://us.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-isolate/10852482.html
Also, plant-based protein powders are less effective due to an incomplete amino acid profile as I remember. An example I heard is that with rice protein powder you need twice as much protein to equal the effectiveness of whey protein. That means twice the calories and the rice protein is more expensive while you're also having to take a higher amount. When I get home I'll try to find the video that talked about it.

I've tried a lot of different whey proteins and they all fuck with my digestion. I'm sensitive to milk and always have been and I might even have an allergy and never knew. Whatever might not be ideal about plan based protein I'm willing to take the tradeoff. I don't get the shits or feel uncomfortable anymore.

Lately I've been attacking sugars. I skip desserts, stopped eating candy, drink less soda, and use half as much sugar in my coffee as I used to. Little by little. I look at "diet" in a very long term sense. Since I don't have weight issues my mentality isn't about radical changes or crash course approaches like a lot of diets. Every change I make is a sustainable permanent lifestyle change.

There are some plant based proteins that have pretty complete amino acid profiles, but yes in general plants lack them and most plant based proteins do too.
This is why vegans are so irritable and bitchy and have boobs. They swear they're getting complete nutrition but not really. Some can, but you have to work really hard to be a well nourished vegan.

I've tried a lot of different whey proteins and they all fuck with my digestion. I'm sensitive to milk and always have been and I might even have an allergy and never knew. Whatever might not be ideal about plan based protein I'm willing to take the tradeoff. I don't get the shits or feel uncomfortable anymore.![]()
I'm the same way with Whey. Just saying eventually I found some that don't cause any issues.
Interesting. I'll consider doing some better research on different brands.
