Recommended sci-fi novels?

Looking to bite into some novels. I prefer sci-fi, solid plot, solid character development, maybe more of a modern or timeless approach etc..

Any suggestions?

The Expanse series is outstanding.
Altered Carbon is also good but weird.
Scalzi's Old Man's War series is great.

I got plenty more if you need.

William Gibson, the "Cyberspace Trilogy" in this order: Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive. Gorgeous!!!

Robert Heinlein, almost anything, but especially The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, the Puppet Masters, Friday and Stranger in a Strange Land. These are stand-alone books, many of his are not, and it can be confusing if you start reading any of the "Howard Family" novels out of order. His earlier stuff is more young adult.

Harry Harrison's The Stainless Steel Rat series. First 4 are the best. Not too serious, but hilarious and action packed.

Holy carp, I somehow never knew that was a trilogy. I read a borrowed copy of Neuromancer back in the day and it knocked me out. Had no idea there was an ongoing story there...

Stranger was one of the few books I was required to read in college that I actually dug.

My best friend in high school was a HUGE fan of that series. The only one I read was The Stainless Steel Rat for President ~ and yeah, fun.

My recommendation:

Michael Swanwick: Stations of the Tide. A true work of art that transcends the genre.

The first Enders Game novel was good, as was a bunch of Robert A Heinlin's stuff.
