Making a career move

Post by K-Bizzle »

You guys may or may not have noticed my increased posting of late, thats primarily because I've been beyond fed up at work and stopped hustling like I used to.

Long story short we got a new VP/General Manager, a friend of the owner, and he's really destroying the company with his amateur hour managerial style.

So I put in my notice 3.5 weeks ago and my last day is this Friday. 4 weeks is uncommonly long but I'm a manager and I want my department to be in at least ok shape when I leave.
Really having trouble focusing on much of anything this week that isn't something that will help my team and even then its hard.

Its kind of hard leaving a team I built and I department I took over a few years but at this point its whats best for me.

The good is that I'm going to a company that is close enough to home I can ride my bike, will be bringing home more money, and will have much fewer responsibilities. Flexible start time and my boss so far seems great. I did the math and per week I'll literally have 7 hours more time per week back into my life to focus on things I love like guitar.

In addition to that I've been freelancing on the side and that been a nice extra bump of income and it shows no signs of slowing.

This Friday cannot come soon enough.

Good luck and I am jelly.

I'm far past the point of being ready for a change. But, the right offer/opportunity hasn't come my way. Yet.

Congrats!!
I'm kinda in the same boat at work - but I don't expect anything better to come along, since I really am not looking actively.
I'm just riding out the issues here - doing my job, and tying not to let it get to me.

I do envy you though.

That sounds like a win-win. Good for you for leaving the bozo boss and landing on your feet. You have to take care of you and yours, first and foremost. I haven't really talked about it, but a few months ago my boss wasn't really doing his job and when there was a hiccough, he tried to blame it on me. When I called him out on it, he made it severe and I almost quit. I even interviewed with one of our competitors and called my old boss. About two weeks later, the g.m. fired him. So far, things have been going smooth with my new boss.

A flexible, sane schedule can make all the difference and is pretty much the only reason I stay where I am. Hope it works out for! Change is hard.

FWIW I've been causally looking since January and have mostly focused on updating my resume and getting it into the hands of as many recruiting companies in my field as possible.

Then I just decided commute time, typical working hours, and company culture were my top interests and said no A LOT.
Only went on a handful of interviews because frankly I said no to 95% of all opportunities brought to me and even then most ended up having a disqualifier of some kind.

Definitely have to play the long game if you want the type of upgrade you really want.

FWIW my current company wants me to consult for them moving forward. I've agreed to it but we'll see what it actually looks like to see if I want to do it.
Either way I'll take the extra income without the responsibility.

I'm ready to change but yeah I fully agree.
I've really given a lot of my time, life, and focus to the company I'm leaving.
The new place my schedule and commute will be awesome but the biggest thing is the reduction in responsibility. My circle of concern will go from practically the entire technical side to focusing only on controls programming.
Hopefully leaving me a little more mentally free even during the time away from work.

Its really incredible how bad it is.
We're an OEM CNC manufacturer, IE VERY FUCKING TECHNICAL.
The dude in charge literally has only managed sleazy clubs and has been running this place like one.
0 trust environment, thinks everyone is replaceable, thinks no one does anything, etc.

Not to mention how much his massive ego literally squashes everything and leaves him immune to hearing anything that will actually help him and the company.
You don't need to be technical to run a company like this but if you aren't you need to listen to those who are when they're speaking on such issues.

The sad thing is I think my department will essentially crumble after I leave. I'm guessing all but 1 or 2 of my guys will leave as well, I really do not know how this company will last even 5 more years at the rate they're going.

yup - sounds like HIS boss - friend of the new guy or not - needs a wake up call on your way out.
You will be doing them a big favor it sounds like.
Don't hold back (assuming you get an exit interview with the big buy, and not just the schlub)

As much as you care about your department, the moment you walk out it is no longer your problem. Sentiment is nice, but it is also worthless. Just like loyalty.

I am also in a situation where one of my supervisors is as green as the grass. It's tough working for someone that doesn't deserve any respect. So I can totally relate.

Definitely a good move. I see no downsides.
Having more time and flexibility to focus on your personal life is huge. I don't love my job (it's just ok) but I've been doing it for 11 years now because it allows me to work from home and have a lot of flexibility. It made a difference in all aspects of my life, allowed me to be closer to my son, play more music etc... work/life balance is extremely important but often overlooked or underrated.

So important to me these days, cannot state this enough.
I've really given away some great years to working too much and you can literally see it in my face if you compare pictures before/after I became a manager. I feel like in 2 years I've aged almost 10, fuck that.

I actually turned down what would have been a really great promotion with more money in favor of this job. I'm at the point where I'm comfortable financially and I'm not a status seeker so it just wasn't worth the extra stress and time it'd take.

_ej_ wrote:Congrats dude! Whats the new place?

Its a packaging company, don't really want to post the name.
Pretty boring work compared to what I'm used to TBH but I could really use boring right now.
I'll only be doing controls engineering and thats its. Can't wait to have much less to think about and focus on.
