My dog got me a gift today

Post by GuitarBilly »

I have an English Coonhound that I adopted about 6 months ago. From day one, she's been obsessed with the pigeons that hang out in my backyard in the morning, always chasing them and trying to catch one.

This morning, I left her out and after a while I heard some commotion in the backyard... running, howling, wings flapping etc.
I go check it out and she comes running to me with a pigeon in her mouth and drops it at my feet all happy  It was pretty clean kill too, she just pinned the bird down and twisted its neck, if this was something we could eat that would've been a perfect catch since the bird was intact, she didn't draw a single drop of blood.
Easy to forget how crazy good hunters some dogs are.

Yeah owls don't really hang out on the ground so I don't think she would care... and Gypsy is big so I don't think an owl would be interested in her either. It would be a bigger concern for my other dog, Dexter, which is a 7lb pinscher/chihuahua mix. That would be good prey for a large raptor like a Grey Horned Owl or a hawk. We don't get too many of them here but I am always watching when he's outside.

Those hounds are goofy as all hell until you put a mark in front of them. Then they become deadly. My old neighbor had one that killed a couple of large rats. On two different occasions she opened the back door and he bolted like a missile and came back with a dead rat in his mouth. It all went down in probably less than 5 seconds. Those fucking rats had zero chance against him.

My father in law has two labs that we use to hunt duck & pheasant. They're amazing retrievers.

Food pigeons need to be referred to as squabs... else you run the risk of being seen as a garbage eater.

I too, am a fan.

This is 100% true  She's the goofiest dog ever until she sees something she can hunt. I take her to a nearby park that has a lot of wildlife (rabbits, lizards) and every 5 minutes or so she zeros into something.... her face and demeanor completely changes and she starts walking really quietly, which is crazy for an 85lb dog that is usually clumsy as hell

Most of the time, I don't even know what she's looking at but every time I let her get closer to where she's pointing at, something comes running out  Then she looks at me like "hey aren't you going to shoot that?" ... it's quite funny.
I didn't even know they had rabbits there until I took her with me. I have to keep her on her leash or it would be a massacre lol

Thats a good dog! I've got a rottweiler black lab mix. Huge 130lb sweetheart. I raised a good boy who is 3 years old now. He has 'gun dog' instincts like your guy. They love to catch birds but not hurt them. Gotta bring them back for eating!

Great thread!

Billy, you gotta cook that pigeon and give it to Gypsy as a reward!

I had some stupid pigeons ( I don't like pigeons) lay eggs on my patio. I took the eggs to show my kids. Look just like small chicken eggs, they're white too. So my kids went "EWWWWWW!!". I asked them who wanted sunny side up for breakfast, they ran away.
After Tuesday, even the calendar goes WTF!

I gave her a beef jerky. I don't think she knows the difference because she was very happy with it anyway

That's the part that impressed me the most. It was completely clean kills. The bird looked intact except that it was, you know... dead  Not a single drop of blood or bite mark.

What a good girl! Do you think a previous owner trained her to be a hunting dog, or is that all just instinct?

No clue. Probably just instinct. :idk:

She killed another one today  She's on a roll now that she got the hang of it. I need to make sure the birds are out of the yard before I let her out now... as cool as this is, I don't want to be dealing with 5 dead birds a week.

Lol, I had a cat a while back who was a great hunter. Killed off a whole family of moles over a couple of days who had taken up residence in the back yard, almost got a crow in the middle of the road outside our house. She also almost got snatched by a great horned owl from on top of our house one time around sunset.

Best any of my dogs managed was a skunk in the back yard. The dog won, but we had to deal with the odor for days afterward.
