I was wondering why that shitty song was on the radio today. This explains it.

Nice call Slee - love playing Althea, but always have trouble remembering exactly what "I told Althea" and what "Althea told me" so it turns into a jam faster than the original.

Yeah Shea, that is THE show to hear.

I saw them in the 80's like 100 times Jerry looked up twice

Easiest way to listen to quality dead shows (some of them are mostly dull and flat) is t listen to Dick's Picks. Dick died and now they have Dave's Picks but I haven't listened to any of them yet. But yeah that Cornell show is pretty much their most famous, legendary show. Fire on the Mountain in that show is super sick.

1973 is also a particularly good year IMO. There's something going on in the recording process that sounds different in '73 and '74 from other years... I have no idea what it is but the bass stands out to me in a way that's different from any other years.

My first dead show was at Alpine Valley, WI in '82 - it's now available as Dick's Pick #32.
It's nice to have a good recording of that show.

Also on YouTube are Hunter's Trix. Really good shows, great quality.

I heard they didn't even soundcheck that Cornell show. The crew got everything setup, Jerry came out, was like, not this fucking place again and walked back to the bus. Hahahaha

St Stephen is great tune too. So many good ones.

I went to a Dead show in like 95..

I just dropped a bunch of acid in the parking lot and ended up laughing at all of the traveling circus junkies in their shitty vw van.. One tried to rip me off.. it was hilarious when I came back and demanded my money back, (which I got). Lol.. but i guess that's a story for another day

tbh I was never a fan of the whole "scene" and still don't really care for the quintessential head types, most of the art associated with the dead or pretty much any of the "culture" surrounding the Dead. So many of them are pretentious assholes. That said, I have met and still am in contact with some pretty cool folks that I've met at shows or dead related sites online. They are die hard fans but to look at them you'd just think they were some random nerd, not the typical dirty ass stinky fuckhead that would be willing to rip off someone that wasn't deemed a "real head".

When I got turned on to them it was purely about the music and being interested in them led me to all sorts of other artists that to me represent the very best of American music from country rock, blues, jazz, gospel, bluegrass etc. that you'd never hear on the radio. I call Grateful Dead my gateway band for that very reason. They did their own thing which some people love and some people hate, but they were very much influenced by deep rooted American music from many genres.

Speaking of jazz, the dead introduced me to Branford Marsalis through this performance...

Garcia played pedal steel on a couple of this guy's tunes. Great singer and songwriter but didn't enjoy a ton of success. His 2nd album New Train was recorded in 1973 but was never released until 2000. His debut album is also great but is fairly rare to find. Such feel good stuff
