For an IOS soft synth; go for Poison 202. $10 and absolutely killer sounding! I have a keyboard controller I am going to start using with my Ipad. Sounds are off the hook.

SampleTank. The free version is actually usable.

Almost everything I've ever recorded has a softsynth in it somewhere, for ambience or texture.

Ones I use all the time:

NI Absynth
NI Massive
NI FM8
Arturia MiniMoog (Before I got a REAL moog yaaaay!)
Reason (From v8 forward, the aliasing issue isn't so bad anymore, and the filters are so much smoother IMO)

It can be super crashy though. I love IK stuff, just wish it was more stable, especially Sampletank.

Well, that's weird. I've never had any issues with it on my 2010 Mac mini or old 09 MacBook. I use version 2, though.

Forgot about that! I had an old version of Reason Adapted that I loved. I was sad when I upgraded to OSX Mavericks and Reason stopped working. Redrum was great for programming drum tracks.
