New condenser mic on its way.

Post by colejustesen »

I was looking for a vocal mic that can work for a baritone voice, but also something that is more neutral so it wouldn't hype the nasally components of my voice. There were so many options and a lot of the research pointed me in the direction of a Neumann U47 FET. I knew they were expensive, but wasn't expecting to see them in the +$2500 range. Since that wasn't feasible for me, I began looking for alternatives that can give the U47 flavor. After reading numerous descriptions and reviews, I decided to try out an Advanced Audio CM47fet CE. This uses a 32 mm AK47 capsule to reproduce the vintage vibe and is coupled with a transformer for some character. I am not sure how this will be with my voice, but if it doesn't suit my vocal range I can use this on guitar amps and acoustic instruments due to its high SPL rating.

Pretty excited to try a mic with a transformer and and less hyped treble and bass responses.

Has anyone tried this brand of microphone? Seems like there is quite a following on other forums of this brand.

That a great mic! We use it at the studio for radio liners. Very clear, balanced, and sits right in.

oh nice! interested to hear what you think of it-- i've come across that one a lot of times and thought it'd make a good vocal mic to have around here- and the price wasn't crazy. report back!

I am not a vocalist by any means, but I can tell you that this mic suits my voice more than the other mics I have tried (KEL Song Sparrow, Blue Bluebird, Shure SM57). It is not overly hyped in any frequency, but there is a still a clarity about the mic. I think I like it the best with the gain up a bit on my ART Pro MPA II with moderate volume output, as opposed to the gain down and more volume output. It makes it sound a bit more smooth this way (probably due to the preamp tube compression). I would love to try this with a mic preamp that is widely accepted in the recording industry, but that won't happen (at least for a while). I was thinking of grabbing a Miktek MPA-201 at some point, or a Universal Audio 4-710D.
