What artist/band had the best return after cheesing out?

Post by mortatone »

What artist or band do you feel has done the best at returning to relevance after jumping the shark?

Great thread. I'll have to ponder :hmm: I can bet that most of the responses would be of the metal variety.

I don't know if "relevant" really describes them now, but GnR went through breakup, Axl in cornrows rapping and becoming a whale, and now are back to kicking ass live.

Ya the album he did with Allison Krauss was pretty good. Clapton made an attempt but whether you think it worked or not is open for debate. In the 2000's he put out on an album with BB King, JJ Cale, tribute to Robert Johnson, and toured with Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II.

That said once a band loses it they rarely get it back IMO. Plus you get old and don't have the same fire you did when you were young.

I thought about him as far as being relevant and doing new things late in his career, but I'm not sure he ever really cheesed out real bad. In fact he refused to do any Zep stuff pretty integriously, no?

Kiss? I mean, they jumped the shark with the clown makeup before they were even big. Plus, I think they had like 15 "final" tours.

Was just thinking them. From Souls of Black to Low I assume?

Testament didn't really cheese out, but Low is so much better than the previous three albums.

I forgot The Ritual :freak: I dig PWYP quite a bit for a more commercial offering from them but I am in agreement on the other 2.

I love the Plant solo stuff. No cheese ever, imo. Telephant mentioned Clapton up a ways back and I pretty much like his cheesy era (well; maybe I just like Forever Man :hmm: ) only

I'm not even a Metallica fan, and their new stuff is so much better than the last few albums. Same with Megadeth.

Eminem: Recovery (aptly named) also comes to mind. It's pretty great, and the few before it were just drug-addled garbage with way less fire and wit than he began with.

Agreed. Some cheesy vids around 1990 but musically pretty solid throughout imo.

My first thought was Neil Young after the mediocre-at-best shit he put out 80's but then capping off the decade with Freedom, which is one of my favorite Neil Young records and Ragged Glory after that.
Wu-Tang is for the children.
