Are Murray and Smith the best dual guitar tandem?

Post by jnurp »

In Metal.

I honestly cannot think of a better duo than those two. Im not really referring to technical skills or actual talent on the instrument. This is more about the music and who makes the best music together. If this were an all time two best guitarists together maybe its becker/friedman or boulllet/gilbert or something like that. However for this discussion I would rather focus on a dynamic duo that shines together making great music who play off eachother the best. I just cannot think of a better duo than those two. Im not even a huge Maiden fan, but cmon those harmonies and runs are just enigmatic, even in major keys, and classic.

Yeah man, I have a tough time deciding between them or Tipton/Downing. Like you said, if it was based on prowess I'd go with Gilbert/Bouillet but I think Murray and Smith are all sorts of "chocolate / peanut butter"

Yes , they had the better chops , they also were best at using them in sharing solos for the sake of the song . Not until maybe Night Ranger did both have such high skills .

Splash screen hmmm.... I always wondered what it was called, but never felt compelled to look it up.

Back to the OP: I go round and round between Smith/Murray and Crosby/Demartini.

That one is an easy tiebreaker for three reasons. Crosby wasn't a very good lead guitarist. Ratt is broken up, and Crosby is dead.
