Also; this band is a prime example of taking rock and roll vibes and grooves that would potentially make me and twisting them just enough and adding the RAWK as well as killer Neil Fallon lyrics and making some good music! Fallon is absolutely the reason for me digging this band.
Can I express a (perhaps) semi-controversial opinion and state that Clutch only really delivers because Neil Fallon?
Then go listen to The Company Band. That's a "supergroup" with Neil and it's nowhere near as good as Clutch. I agree, Neil is as strong a voice that you could ever ask for in a gritty rock band and his voice pulls some serious weight, but Clutch is Clutch because they are Clutch.

That's my opinion anyway.
It's not so much the strength of his voice as the catchiness and personality in his lyrics. That's what makes them for me. Watching the rest of the band is like watching paint dry imo. So the obvious thing to do since I feel that way is to start a thread about it

Neil's lyrics are weird and clever and often hilarious, and heavily fortified with oblique references to my hometown (they're from like 5 miles from where I grew up, and about my same age). They're so funny, and tossed out so casually, that I'll turn to my wife and go, "Haha, he's talking about Montgomery Vill...oh wait, you have no idea what the fuck."
But hey, I'm just happy my county has better musical exports to brag about these days than "Half of Hootie and the Blowfish. No...the other two."

I've seen Clutch 5 or 6 times now and they always throw the fuck down. They don't rely on gimmicky visual stuff but Neil knows how to command a crowd. They're like an old school rock show and I always have a good time when I see them.

I saw them once probably 20-25 years ago. They held their own against Sepultura and Fear Factory which says a lot. Especially considering the timeframe for both those bands was in their absolute heydays.
Does the Company Band have the same level of smarts in their lyrics? I'm normally drawn to more of a traditional singing voice or something on the extreme end of the spectrum. Fallon isn't really in either one of those camps, but dude just knows how to craft a hook imo.
The Company Band is decent. B- in my book. It's Fallon. He does what he does.
Overall Clutch is just a better band. Clutch gets an A+ from me because there is nothing fancy shmancy fusiony shreddy, overtly "brootz", and like Shea said it's all void of gimmicks. Just straight forward groovin' ass kicking for the average manly hommie. For modern stripped down rock and roll it's hard to beat Clutch.

Yeah, but the important question is: why you hatin' on Beale Street?

JP is so fucking locked that I get hypnotized watching him play, even though he's not exactly a flailing showman on the kit. The guy is just dope as hell.
I also love that with the exception of the first album (where I think their label probably was hoping for some nu-metal love), they've never given in to the clicky kick, brickwalled drum sound of the last 20 years of hard rock and metal. His kick drum is strong in the mix, and has boom and snap, but it sounds like an actual drum, not a giant pair of castanets.
