Queensryche / Armored Saint @ local venue!!!

Post by Tortuga »

I've been really hoping this tour would land near me, and I've hit the jackpot. We've got a killer venue that opened last year (Riverside Municipal Auditorium) that's had some fairly good-sized names come through: Motorhead, Down, Offspring (next week), and Ghost (later this year), along with some pretty cool tribute nights where we get to see 4-5 great bands for free or super-cheap.

Going to this one, for sure - Queensryche and Armored Saint. Can't wait for November!!! :rawk:

The one without the pretentious bitch lead singer, I think.

I saw AS open for WASP who opened for Metallica in a small bar in CT when I was 16 , that was back when they had "all ages" shows in bars . That was 1985 .. I still remember it like it was yesterday RIP Cliff .

This version of Queensryche is playing the county fair near me this year. I wanna go, but I'm going to be out of town that week. :(

Oh well, I saw them several years ago when they were still O.K. and Geoff Tate could still sing at least.

Man, I barely missed this era - I didn't start going to clubs until right around that time. Would have killed to see that billing - even WASP would have been a badass show in those days.

I've been a fan of Armored Saint since the original EP came out in '83, but didn't get out to see shows until I got older. Sucks, because by the time did start going to clubs, I'd missed seeing many of the bands playing at small nearby gigs that would consume me for the next several years (mainly Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer).

My first time seeing Armored Saint was at a battle of the bands in a park in Cerritos just after Delirious Nomad (early '86?) came out. I'm pretty sure it was just Dave Pritchard playing guitar - Phil Sandoval (he's the guy that got his leg broken by Dave Mustaine) was out by then. KNAC was all the rage, and Tawn Mastery (the Leather Nun) did the MC'ing. They played on the top of a 40' flatbed trailer, and I remember seeing one of the PA speakers actually burst into flame about midway through. There was a chain-link fence along the front of the trailer to keep ppl from getting underneath, but I rememember seeing that fence completely crushed and driven to the ground by the raging metalheads at the foot of the stage. 80s at it's best :beavis:

The second time I saw them was in '89 or so, at what was probably one of Dave Pritchard's last shows before he died (RIP). This was at the Waters Club in San Pedro. Jeff Duncan (from Odin - he was in that band when they appeared in The Decline of Western Civilization, Pt 2) had recently joined the band, so it was cool getting to see them work together before things changed dramatically for the band.

I saw them again back in 2011 at the Key Club on the LA strip, which used to be the old Gazzarri's , and got to meet them after the show. Was fantastic, and I can't wait to get to see them again in a few months :thu:

I did see Queensryche when they opened for Metallica at Long Beach Arena on the opening leg of the ...And Justice For All tour. This was probably '88 or '89. They came out and bored the crap out of us before Metallica destroyed the place. I specifically remember Geoff Tate bringing out a stool and singing on a couple songs. Fuck, that was sad. The only thing I really liked from them was Queen of the Ryche, and I don't think they played that song.

I've seen AS many times. Always awesome.

I haven't seen the new QR yet, but I saw Geoff Tate's new solo band a few months ago and that was a fantastic show. Say what you want about GT, he's an incredible vocalist.

The new QR singer sounds good too, so it should be fun.

Glad to hear that about the new vocalist. I'm not really hateful towards Queensryche - just haven't connected with them much, if at all.

Queensryche was awesome up through Empire. Then they went to poop. I dug the Ep and Warning but I really dug Rage for Order and Mindcrime. Very original sounding and ambitious while still staying metal. The new singer is good and can pull off the material so :idk: New stuff I have heard has all been pretty solid return to form. I don't know if they'll ever "recapture the magic" so to speak; but it will be a good show.

Tate has a more specific register where I would say he is still strong; I just feel like once he got the boot from QR; he hasn't surrounded himself with quite the caliber of musician needed to carry his legacy material. I would still go see him if it was a local show.

I've loved Armored Saint since forever. Bush' recent clips sound good in his lower register but when he goes up to his screeching zone; you can tell he has some age on the pipes. No matter as the show will still rock :rawk:
