budget monitoring cans suggestions

As can be expected, 20 year old technics cans really suck for trying to mix with. I need some acceptable quality cans for mixing/tracking. Think lower end of the budget scale for now as I'd rather save some coin for better monitors further down the line if I'm going to get the use out of them.

I hate to be the "don't cheap out" guy, BUT....

Audio Technica ATH-M50x.

I went to sweetwater, and tested like 9 pairs of cans from $50 to $200. AKG's, Sennheisers, Audio Technica, Sony, etc.

I even went in biased. I remember liking AKG's when I was younger. I also thought Audio Technica had slid into more budget gear.

The M50x's ran away with it. They sounded the best by far, and they are comfortable. Seriously, I can't recommend them enough.

I use AKG712's. They go for around $300 on Amazon. They're not cheap but they sound incredibly natural.

There was a similar thread on GAB a few months back, and based on that, I grabbed these Superlux HD681's. For under $30 shipped, they sound amazing.

Thanks guys - unfortunately my budget for this is pretty limited so it's between the AKG and Superlux models for now.
I was looking at the Superlux on thomann yesterday. How are you finding them?

I only need to get things ball park right as I can go to my buds studio to finish up any serious work as he has a pretty swish set up.

They probably aren't on par with the phones that sell for $300, but I feel like they are much nicer than the price point would indicate. They're pretty evenly balanced and 'realistic', for lack of a better term; in the way that they don't force you to change the eq on your mix unless something really needs to change. I use my iphone earbuds, my car stereo, and the Superlux to test my mixes, and I think they sound pretty good. I also take them on international flights for watching movies and listening to music - they cut down the engine noise, keep my head warm, and provide good sound (of course).

Monoprice has MDR7506 copies (8323).. well not exactly, but they are designed around those drivers. Being a huge 7506 fan I tried them. Best budget $20 headphones, plus you can buy ear pad replacements.

Just got back from Africa and ordered the Superlux evos. I'll give my thoughts on them when I've spent a bit of time with them.

I have the HD681 Evo set and they sound incredible to me. I haven't compared them against the like Audio-Technica, or other higher priced cans; but I like what I hear. I do want to get a set of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro cans though.

My evos have just turned up. Listening to some neurosis through them and they sound pretty awesome. I should have some time to mix on them this weekend to get a better feel for them.

I just got the Monoprice ones. Didn't sound any worse then my Sennheiser HD 280's. Pretty good for around $20 shipped.
