For several years I got by with the compressors and EQs and verbs built into my DAW before hunting down good plugins. I've found very few freebie mastering plugins that sound better than the stock ones.

I think it's worth the $50-75 (i think) for Steven Slate FG-X. Especially since this is your solo project and all. The Slate Stuff really is good. My clips went from meh to cool in terms of production just by using some Slate stuff.

:hmm: Is it fairly idiot proof? I need to go through my old external hd and see what I have on there. Now that I have something to record with; it might prove useful to be able to make it sound good

The slate stuff is uber idiot proof.

And nevermind. Price has gone up on the FG-X to $100

Check out this tutorial on Vladg plugins. I use the presets he recommends and just pull the gain/level down on the eq a little bit. The video quality isn't very good but the information is. I struggle with many tutorials but this guy explains things in a way that makes sense, to me anyway.

Man if you're going to record a lot maybe grab the Slate monthly subscription for $19. It gives you ALL his plug ins.

I'm signing up when I get back from the Midwest

I just started a new job and I think I'm totally going to grab the Slate subscription when I get my first paycheck. I'll try to post up my thoughts on it when I'm able to spend some time with it.
