Sveltana =C= are out of production

Post by Zozobra »

Always sad to see a tube production company to fold. They were damn fucking pricey though and ultimately that mark up cost them. I never felt it was worth the extra scratch in the amps I favour but I know a lot of you folk swear by them.

Official news perhaps never. We'll know if they drop off the shelves in the next few months.

There will always be plenty of tubes to buy.

So are we talking about the New Sensor Svetlana or the SED =C=?

It could be bull but the guy who posted it is a well respected member of m-e-f. He was talking about the good stuff.

There hasn't been any conformation but it's pretty widely expected that Svetlana/SED is getting out of the consumer audio tube business. The hi-fi community noted rumors and reports from furloughed SED workers that they haven't made any audio tubes in nearly a year and have jut been shipping out a surplus they ran up.

SED's bread and butter is industrial products. Audio tubes are commercially obsolete and only have the small cottage markets of guitarists and hi-fi enthusiasts, for which SED was sharing the market with much lower-priced competitors. And it couldn't have helped their market share to lose the Svetlana trademark to New Sensor in the U.S.; it's not a growing market for SED, it's a shrinking market and I doubt it makes up enough of the annual revenue to bother continuing.

Dude in the OP's link is talking about stocking up on quality 6550's and Kt88's.

I'll stick with the ValveArt 6550's; they are the cheapest I've found and sound as good as anything else I've tried

The big issue is the Ampeg SVT. The SED is the ONLY current 6550 that can survive the punishment of the SVT, that's how much more robust they are. Many of the other options won't survive long enough to bias.

I can't think of any other application where you can't substitute.

I love the =C= 6550's I have in my Metroamp 68 Superbass bastard plexi, but I didnt buy them. I aquired them in a trade deal with a forum member (Thanks again Mr Wonka).

Had I had to bought tubes, it prolly woulda been EH KT88's, as that's about all I can afford, for big glass.

Ahhh.. the days of being single & eating Ramen noodles & smoking cheap cigs to be able to afford nce stuff... gone. ha ha.

Buying expensive stuff out right doesnt happen anymore.

Winged C's are extremely pricey and it really is subjective as to wether or not they are worth it. I do know that businesses that prefer to make a dollar once compared to a nickel a hundred times tend to not last long.
