Some issues.
Pots were mega dirty, cleaning the jacks and tube sockets as we speak.

Didn't originally see this, but in the for sale ad the guy said it was blowing fuses. Doh.

Got damn lucky this time. As he was using a 1A fuse instead of the 5A fuse it needs.

Whew.

Looking dark. Not sure if I should care.

On first try (before cleaning), there isn't much bass with out the bass knob pulled.

I thought these had a lot of low end. Too much.

Overall pretty brittle on the first channel/non-AOR.
Hope it's not a bad pot.

Pull the knob or go to the AOR channel and
Hopefully my cleaning and bias will help.

Don't know about the tubes. All unmarked. And looking old.

Will old tubes make this amp shrill? I'm assuming they're original.

There's a weird harsh mid-range and presence to this thing.

With the preamp volumes around noon, it's very shrill.

The more gain the more saturated and dark it gets, which is cool, but I don't need that much gain, and it deletes the option of having a semi clean channel.

Only other person that seems to think its a bright amp, is some guy on HC.
Either it's the same amp or he's having the same issues in '09.
Tubes, caps or a random failed component?

I have full output, and everything seems to be working correctly.
Fucking loud.
With all the preamp knobs up, the master up, and all of the tone controls pulled out. Sounds very similar to SLEEP. no pedals or anything. I was very surprised to hear that.

I've got to try a different cab too. See if that helps.

Might not be anything wrong with it. Might just be the way they are. Who knows.

Probably needs new tubes and maybe caps too. It should not be a shrill sound. It should sound something like an 800 with a different voicing.

Ya, these things have SO MUCH bottom end. Great amps. I've had mine for (geeze) 20 years now. Is your the one with the footswitchable gain stage? Either way they have tone that just kills.

Wow, that shit's wired like a Marshall, well, like Marshalls I've seen from the 70s. This is a Laney? I know nothing about them. I will have to look into them.

That looks like an absolute beast! I almost bought an AOR50 instead of the GH50L, but I liked what I was hearing/reading about the GH, so I decided to start there with Laney amps...

I can't wait to hear that beast!

Okay, I've just been staring at the schematics and was having a hard time figuring things out, I'm so used to older and simpler amps, but this thing looks like it has a butt-load of gain in the High input.

For sure. The low input sounds fantastic as a single channel amp.

The AOR is basically less gain and more gain.

As for the bass, tons when the bass knob is pulled.
Just barely enough when non-pulled and maxed.

Never played a 800, but it seems to have that bite and attenuated low end to fit a mix

Mine has a shit ton of lows when knob is out...fucking insanely loud too! Clobbers my hard hitting drummer all the time. :thu:
I have mine set in high input, all knobs at 1 o'clock position, All tone knobs pulled, and I hit the front of it with a Keeley DS-1. Fucking. Metal.

I've had mine (AOR 50) for a year and never tried the loop yet. :hmm:
I read somewhere that they were useless, or something-or-other...I guess it's worth a shot. What kind of EQ have you tried in the loop?

What kind of speakers are you using to handle all the lows? This amp doesn't eat speakers?

Yeah, I get those lows with the knob pulled.

Do you feel like it has a zing to the tone?

I had a 6 knob 50 watter, and I hated it. It was harsh, shrill, just plain shitty sounding. I took mine to my local amp tech and had it checked out. He said there was nothing wrong with it, that's just how it sounds. I got rid of it very quickly.

I can make it sound good by twisting the knobs to find the not so shrill sweet spot, but it takes away the cleanish tones.

The power tubes in the picture above are east german RFT EL34s. Generally great tubes. I'd expect that old tubes usually tend to make an amp darker, warm sounding, not primarily shrill.
