School me on Power/prog metal

Post by BlackWolf »

I've joined some guys to start a Power/progressive metal band. But only thing I really hear that is progressive is Dream Theater, AAL and Intervals and Metalcore, Groove Metal and stuff like that has been growing on me lately.

My main infuences are Metallica, Dream Theater and Pantera and I want to expand my horizons.

So...help me pls ^^

On a serious note, have you listened to stuff like Porcupine Tree, Symphony X, Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, Kings X and Mastodon? I don't listen to this stuff much, just going off of what one of my friends listens to.

Symphony X I already know from a few years ago.

The rest I only know by name, never actually listened to them. Going to look up on Spotify.

Dude!

These guys recently toured Brazil. They have a song paying tribute to our Expedicionary Force from WWII. :rawk:

I just saw them with Amon Amarth. I pretty much had to keep from busting out laughing the whole time as its totally not my thing and I found it hilarious and awful.

That said, the dudes totally went all out and had fun with their act while being "serious" about it. I was surprised by how much of the crowd was into it.

One the power metal side of things

One of (if not THE) founders:

One of my favorites. Admittedly cheesy but catchy as f**k:

Both bands have phenomenal vocals; which is a must for me for this style.

Listening to Meshuggah - Bleed

Quite boring. Bunch of one note riffs and screams...will dig a little more to see if I can find something cool.

In my mind prog metal and power metal have nothing in common. :D Power metal is pretty much the antithesis of anything progressive.

Granted Lux Occulta doesn't really have much metal in it nowadays.

Hmm...loves me some Savatage but I never really thought of them as either prog or power. I guess they would be prog thrash?

Really, most "prog metal" has nothing progressive about it either. Just the same fucking bullshit done over and over for the last 25 or so years. "Look how progressive we are. We've blatantly ripped off Dream Theater AND Symphony X!" :idk:

I have this CD. Don't remember anything about the music, but the song names "Steel Lord On Wheels" and "Stare At Yourself" still crack me the fuck up.

Dream Theater or Symphony X don't count as prog in my mind. :D Having a 3/4 drum fill every 3 minutes doesn't make music progressive, Metallica already did that in the 80's. Doing something that counts as a "new sound" does.
