What Can Beat A SD-1 Into A Marshall?

Post by TurboPablo »

Please, nothing boutique or expensive. But, what really can top that pair? I'm looking for another overdrive to have fun with. Something not necessarily to compliment the SD-1. More to have a different or opposite flavor. I've been watching demos of the MXR Custom Badass OD. But it's kind of meh....Not terrible. Just meh.

My SD-1 into my DSL is epic face-rape.

Scumden, opinions please.

Q: What Can Beat A SD-1 Into A Marshall?

A: A clean boost into a Vox. :lash:

Seriously though, Depends how you run the Marshall. If it's distorting and you're using the SD-1 to push it further, you might not notice a huge difference switching different pedals - it'll still be the amp overdrive pushed a little harder.

If you're running the amp more clean though the world's your oyster.

The SD-1 has a bass cut and lots of ragged upper midrange goodness. So maybe get something that's much more full range. I actually love boosting amps with clean boosts - it sounds massive and because the bass is still all there when you dig in you run out of headroom more easily, the overdrive has a fuzzy edge to it. To be honest I love that because to me it's got more character.

Any clean boost will do it, so maybe start with the MXR micro amp?

A Hardwire CM-2 or a Wilson effects overdrive.

A Rat into your Mashall would sound great, but that is more of a distortion pedal.

AMT Tube Magnum. Been using that set up for the past few months. Love it. Separtate Bass & Treble controls, FTW

My Rat is my other go-to dirtbox. I can't express how much I love it. It doubles well as a overdrive when set right. I'm just looking for a different or opposite taste to the SD-1. I may buy another off the used GC site and mod it for fun. They can be had for $20. I probably should do a DS-1 while I am at it. Since they also can be had for peanuts.

I honestly can't see spending a ton on a OD when a cheapo SD-1 sounds good as is.

If you haven't tried a tube screamer that would be my first suggestion, otherwise a good clean boost is awesome! I really like the MXR/CAE MC401.

The daddy-o impressed me. Iirc it's based on one of the marshal x-master pedals. I had a drive master and it was cool too.

That. Superior to the stock pedal in every measurable way.

However, I ended up liking my Bad Monkey better than either for boosting an already-crunching Marshall. :idk:

I need to find me another cheap sd1. I've modded several. A fun pedal to experiment with. Simple mods turn it into something that will curb stomp b00teek pedals. 25 dollar pedal... $5.00 trip to radio shack...patience... Fun.

Soon as I can. Man, this thing is an awesome boost! Still working on tweaking it for a dirt pedal into a clean amp, but as a boost, it rules! :rawk:

I've used the SD-1 for years. Recently got a Keeley SD-1 as a gift and it's a much better pedal, I am using it full-time now.

I also have a DS-1 and love it.
