Show Report; HOF, WindHand, Mountain of Wizards

Post by Diocide »

So I got to see a great show last night.

First up;
Mountain of Wizards. Great instrumental band. Kinda on a retro rock tip, but a bit heavier. Great stuff. The drummer is the current drummer for EYeHateGod. Very rocking and groove oriented. Cool dual leads from the guitarists. I honestly forgot what Amos they were using, but the were representin Gibson with one SG and one LP. Good stuff. Picked up their 7".

Windhand:
I've seen them once before and they're awesome at what they do. Full Black Amps stack, full White Amps stack, and the bass player was playing two 8x10s, powered by an older Ampeg (maybe an SVT) and the slaved into a Sunn coliseum slave head for the other cab. WALL OF FUCKING FUZZ to say the least. I was looking at the one guitarists fuzz pedal, which I didn't recognize, but he literally had the gain and volume at 10, and the tone knob at 0. If you dig slow stoner doom, WindHand is a fucking must.

HOF;
The main attraction. Now I must admit, I'm a much bigger fan of Sleep than I am HOF, not that I dislike them, but sleep is just more my thing. Fatt Pike was fucking great and so was the band. This was one of the last shows on this shirt tour, before they head up to Salem MA to record a new album at God City with Kurt Ballou. They were tight and on point for the majority of the set. They played 2-3 brand new songs that are going to be on the new album. Sounded like they're not changing their style up much, which is either great or horrible depending on your take of their music.

Pike was playing his normal LP (I think he's had that LP forever) with about 6 pedals into some sort of giant combo amp. I honestly have never seen anything like it. It had a couple knobs up front, of what seemed like a 4x12 combo, and another matching 4x12. I noticed he had a Soldano two stomp footswitch for it, but I did not see any branding on the amp itself.

For pedals I remember seeing a ToneBone, what I think was a Bogner distortion pedal (the red one in the pic) a MXR Phase 99 (that's a new one to me) some weird tuner and a handful of other pedals I didn't recognize.

Anyway, here's some pics and feel free to identify more of the pedalboards. Overall tone from all the bands was great and the show was a lot of fun.

Damn sounds like a good show!

I love that Matt still plays shirtless even though he's umm, chubbed up a bit. :lol:

The single knobber with the two LEDs is a BAT Destroyer. Its a the BAT Ritual & Oath in one pedal that you can use either as Oath or Ritual or as Matt is doing, together.

I wonder what that thing up top with 90billion knobs is?

Sounds like a fun show!

Interesting. There was the KFK eq obviously. I forgot to mention that one.

The 9 knobbed thing at the top looked like a Jaques pedal of some sort.

I'm just curious as to what he was actually playing through.

He's got the loop pedal I'm assuming to switch between the various pedals. Then he's got the tone-bone, which I thought was an ABY switcher isn't it? Which would again lead me to think there were multiple amps going on?

And then the 2 button footswitch...

Hmmm. Interesting.

And yeah, HOF is essentially the modern Motorhead. Its all sorta the same, but hey, it works. I prefer Sleep as well, but I dig HOF and would love seeing them live.

My buddy is on this tour doing something or other. He travels with HOF and COC and some other stoner bands from time to time doing sound, tour managing, driving the bus etc. etc. Sounds like a great show for fans of the genre :rawk:

The tour manager was about 6'4" and weighed 350 lbs. he could barely bend over enough to tape down cables. The dude setting up all the gear for HOF had a beard and almost an Afro and looked like a younger version of the previously mentioned tour manager. He was wearing overalls. Is your buddy either of them?

6'4, 350 :)

FB messaged him about the rig:
Splitting out to 2 soldano slo100 heads. 1 drives 1 dictator 412 and 1 emperor 412, the other is for solos and thru a dictator 412. Signal also splits to a pignose that is isolated in a roadcase. Pedal board changes often but right now the main distortion is the bogner pedal.

That is awesome JT. And it makes sense he has a couple of heads running. I was trying to figure out the switching if he didn't.

I'm glad he's back to SLO's. I like his tone with those amps.
