Help Me Pick A Speaker For MY DSL40

Post by TurboPablo »

As I have been saying, the amps is way too bright. I've got the treble turned down all the way and the presence at about 11 o'clock. But there is still too much top end coming through. I've read on the web and been told here that the Celestion 70/80 is a notoriously bright speaker. I've been beating on the amp long enough now to know it's really living up to it's rep. In spades.

What I want, is a more neutral or darker sounding speaker with good or great headroom that will obviously tame the highs. But not kill them. I am not a fan of speaker distortion but I don't want something totally stiff. A little bit of give is ok. But I certainly don't want to hear it flapping in the breeze.

Celestion? Emi? I am a bit of a speaker noob. The last pair I bought was a deuce of 90watt Pyle Drivers in 1992 that still reside in my Kustom CTS Cabinet. They get a bad rep, but they actually sound great with all my amps. Especially my JCM800 2204.

What say you all?

Thanks in advance

I love the sound I am getting. Mainly, I need to tame the highs. They are brittle and piercing. But like I said above, I want good headroom. I am not a fan of flapping speakers. I'd rather make the amp do the work.

If any of that makes sense.

So far, the Emi clips I am listening to on the Sweetwater site, the Man-O-War is bast. But, is a 120 Watt speaker going to be too stiff for a 40 Watt amp?

Again, I am pretty much a fucktard when it comes to speaker ratings and such.

I haven't tried Eminence and honestly you don't really need to with Celestion and WGS speakers being in the market. For the time being I wouldn't mix speakers because if you're a speaker noob you're not doing yourself any justice in getting more familiar with a particular speaker's tone.

-Try V30 or WGS versions veteran/retro 30
-Try T75 or WGS version.. higher wattage tends to give less speaker distortion
-Try H30 or WGS version (reaper?)
-Try CL80 or WGS version BL-80 <--my personal favorite speaker of all time
-Try K100, another really great and balanced speaker. Guys mention the "big bass" and granted it's got strong bass but to me it just means it's more balanced with the pushed mids.

I don't have a DSL40 but I do have a DSL15 head which I am assuming is in the same ballbark. Played it throug a Blackstar 1x12 w/ Celestion 70/80 and like you said, WAY to bright. Next was a 80's Celestion G12-65 in a Boogie compact 1x12 cab. Good match here, sweet mids but a little looser than I like in the bottom end. Next was a Boogie/Celestion MC90 in the same Boogie cab. This is just about perfect. Not quite as sweet in the mids but it tightened that bottom end right up. The MC90 is a good choice if you are looking for a fairly neutral sounding speaker. I would like to pick up another Boogie 1x12 for the G12-65 and run both cabs, best of both worlds maybe.

I haven't played a 40C yet, but my favorite speaker in the 401 (I know there are some differences) was the G12H 55hz. I'd recommend the WGS Reaper 55hz and a MXR or eq of some sort in the loop.

I used to use the Emi Legend V128 (120 watts) with a Blackstar HT-5 and it was awesome.

The Legend V12 is a great choice if you want to smooth out the treble and add some balls. Love that speaker; the 1x12 cab I have it in sounds awesome with all of my amps.
