Mesa 50 Caliber+ What Say You ScumDen?

Post by TurboPablo »

Working on a trade plus a little cash for my1/10 Subway Rocket Reverb. I just got a Marshall DSL40C, which has a half power switch, so I no longer need the 22 watt Rocket. I am mainly interested in the 6L6 clean tones. As I prefer to slam a clean channel with pedals. The lead channel is a bonus.

It's a long chassis head.

The demos I've watched sound great.

What say you? Are they reliable? Noisy?

Awesome amps. Maybe the best of all the "second tier" Mesa amps ever made. It will deliver you the 6L6 clean tones you desire in spades, but the lead channel is basically 90% of a Mark at 50% of the price, so don't sleep on it either.

50 Cal = win. Aggressive and ballsy. Its not a mrak, but it is pretty close.

Yeah, they are cool. Similar to a Mesa Mark, but i think it has it's own thing going on... it's a little more raw sounding. Just listen to some Corrosion Of Conformity, that's exactly what they sound like.

The clean is very clean and pristine. Pretty nice sounding.

Yeah, he is holding firm on the cash side of the trade so I am waiting him out right now.

It's not like I NEED it or anything. It's just, you know, a Bassman sized head with those 6L6 clean toans. And it would sit so perfectly on top of my black tuck and roll Kustom 2/12 CTS cabinet.

As you can see, I can rationalize almost anything.

they are pretty neat amps. cleans are great and the lead channel gets pretty ballsy. like a really raw mk tone. I prefer the DC Cal. to them

How well do they take to EQ's (pedals or rack) . Ive heard other dudes asise Norton say they're kinda tricky to EQ out.

They come with the standard Mesa 5 band GEQ. You could run another one in the loop, I suppose, but I bet you'd be getting into weird sounding territory - maybe bypassing the built-in EQ would be a better option at that point.
