adding a choke to my peavey ultra plus??? thoughts

what will this do to the overall tone of the amp???? is it a good idea or bad?? would it be worth it??

May or may not be worth it but it's really easy to do and relatively cheap. A choke will usually give you an improvement in touch responsiveness and dynamics. Nothing that would be too noticeable in clips. They can often make the high end a little smoother too, which for me is crucial.

I installed a choke in my Yamaha T-100 head (the Soldano-designed one). The differences are subtle, but more noticeable at volume. Cheap and easy to do (the choke was $30 from MM, and I installed it in 20 minutes without ever having worked on the inside of an amp before).

It can also have a noticeable effect on the amp noise floor and tighten the low end up.

How does one determine what transformer is suitable as a choke for their amp?

Since chokes are cheap enough in general you might as well go with Mercury Magnetics. So just email them what your amp is and they'll tell you which of their chokes is most appropriate for your amp.
