Stressful in that unreasonable expectations are a common occurrence. Dealing with people who are pissed off by things out of my control. Trying to get everything in by deadlines. I typically don't mind the stress as it means I have something to do usually.

It can be, but its not bad and its the first job for a bit I'm not constantly thinking about it when I'm not there. Which is nice.

You pretty much described my job-related stress to a T. Add in a bit of getting responsibility for more and more stuff without having any additional authority to deal with shit, more nonsensical reports to do that take time away from getting my actual job done and you would have nailed it.

My job would be great if it weren't for the customers.

Every day is different... Some days nothing at all happens, other days I don't even get a chance to eat or take a piss. Most of the time I try not to think about what is riding on how I well I do my job, I just do everything by the book and try to remain calm and cool. It can get scary stressful or be completely stress free, it just depends. The worst part is having people screaming at you to get help to their loved ones or to save their homes, because really no matter how fast I get my part of the job done, those people still have to wait for help to get to them and in the rural areas of my unit, that can take half an hour or more. I just have to sound confident and cool, keep stress out of my voice. Another bad thing about taking rural 911 traffic is that we get a lot of people who don't know where they are, it means basically having to know the entire map, specifically major landmarks. We have to know from a cell tower that is miles from where the person is standing and a bad description of landmarks where a person might be... But meh, the benefits kick ass and chicks dig the uniform and I don't have to look at the shit and piss that the responders go ankle deep in when they get there.

I do not consider most issues in life actually stressful. Health problems like cancer or death.... are what consider actual stress.
The fact that Stephen appears from nowhere, is sentenced to death in an emotional public trial without anyone interfering at all and is then altogether forgotten as if nothing happened, is already suspicious.

My job has zero stress, and I find that quite dull to be honest. I am looking to go back to London and rejoin the rat race.

My main career is working on trade floors as a communications/network engineer (in all the big investment banks). I love that job. Unfortunately due to the ressesion my job did get very stressful with high amount of lay offs, hence why I have been side tracked for the last 2 and half years. I need to get back into my work now though before it gets too long and I lose touch.

I planning a trip back to London to knock on some doors soon.
I currently own an English conversation school in south Japan, 10 min from the beach.

While I agree that a lot of people stress over smaller things...it's hard to argue with a guy who is a sole provider for his family and stressed about losing his job. Not that it's the only thing, but just saying.

Dude, your job is so famously stressful that it's become a cliche. Good thing you have awesome gear to vent the stress upon. :thu:

Stress is internal, not external. Of course there are jobs or times that can lead a person to stress out, but even in those times i believe its all in how one handles it.. I used to certainly feel the stress of short deadlines ,especially when the workload is heavy, but i've changed how i feel about those times.. I used to think and stress about the next day or the next thing i needed to accomplish instead of just dealing with the task at hand.. Now, i handle the moment at hand and if i have to work longer hours for weeks at a time, then so be it.. It serves me no use to get all wound up and frustrated when i know I'll be working more than usual..

This last month or so has been some of the busiest and physically demanding times for me in a long time.. Its crazy the amount of work and potential work that is coming my way everyday.. And honestly, im not stressed at all.. Little tired and i dont have as much free time as i like, but eventually it'll even out and when it does ill have some extra cash... All good..

mine is extremely stressful, mostly due to how people make it that way, and due to mass stupidity, but yes.

you carry out 5,000 little details each day, any one of which if not done correctly could yield millions of dollars in damage. if that wasnt stressful enough, due to that potential, there are checks, double checks, re double checks, triple checks, double checks on the triple checks, and this is without even factoring in the dangerous chemicals/environment factor, the long hours or the so-uncomfortable-it-borders-on-sadistic environment of the low level filtered lights and cleanroom suits/masks/gloves/boots/glasses.

and the company is hurting financially. a LOT. they are taking a lot of "measures" and we all knwo whats coming, so we're trying to stay ahead of that.

Yeah, if things go offline then sure, but we are small and don't have much outages. Last one was upgrading from 2005 to 2012 and that was after hours.

No clustering; A live db and a backup machine. We only support about 400 data entry users.

Not really. Old job was stressful, but only really coz we worked for a huge arsehole company where every day was potentially the day I'd find out I didn't have a job anymore.

Now my old boss and his old boss have gone off and started their own thing, and all of the old team (well, what was left of us) left to go do that. Plenty of work to do, but not stressful.

That said, an old old job I had years ago was quite stressful, but I rather enjoyed it. These days I'm fairly bored by work. :idk:

As mentioned, stress comes from the inside not the outside. I used to be very stressed but have made some lifestyle adjustments that have greatly reduced stress. Life is too short to make it shorter by stressing.

A friend once told me that he doesn't believe in depression / stress being caused by outside sources. "I might have woken up depressed today. I might have been stressed at work. But if I win the goddamn lottery on the way home, you can bet your ass I show up tomorrow and take whatever the day throws at me with a huge fuckin grin on my face."

I work in retail management. VERY demanding and it's hard to keep customers AND employees happy while still being fun/energetic AND maintaining a somewhat professional persona. I get respect at my workplace because I earn it. By knowing how to handle any situation, by being fair and assertive with staff and clientele, and by being flexible as all hell. I work hard for them, and they see that. This respect enables me joke around and be friends with the staff. Goof off once in a while, ya know?

Still stresses me out to no end. I delegate, I roll up my sleeves and get into the dirty work, I explain my expectations and give the staff a roadmap to get there... so when things get done wrong, don't get done, or get done correctly in a horribly inefficient way, I get stressed. The last couple managers we've had were very lazy. If you can't count on the ultimate authority figure of the store (who works 48 hours a week) to get things done, who can you count on?

That being said, if I was getting paid another 2-3 bucks an hour.... i'd be a lot less stressed out. I'd be fine dealing with customers and staff and tasks and projects. I could come home and leave all that shit at work. So I guess maybe that means i'm doing it to myself?
