They're running a closed business model where Netflix produced content only airs on Netflix and Netflix subscribers only get Netflix and nothing else.
That works for a while but once you get competition from open subscription services like Sling etc where you're getting several sources of content for basically the same cost, the closed business model cannot compete, even if closed service is actually superior.
This is the same thing that happened with Mac vs Windows, VHS vs Betamax etc... the open model will always outgrow and sometimes even kill the closed model.
What Netflix needs to do is start licensing their content to other platforms or even syndication as well as bring more content sources into their platform or they're going to continue to hemorrhage subscribers.
This would be true, but you overlooked one thing. Netflix is about to buy Roku. They can drop any service that they feel is competition to the bottom of Roku searches. This won't affect people that use Amazon or Apple devices, but Roku has 41% of the North American streaming market. As long as they can keep their stock price up, they can afford to keep buying up competition. I think they thought they could fund enough content to dominate and have realized that will not work, so they're scaling back. They will continue to acquire content that is completed or partially financed by other studios. Motley Fool doesn't think the acquisition will pass, because of antitrust issues. It passes the smell test to me.

That strategy would be a mistake and the result would most likely be the Roku platform losing ground as fast as the Netflix service has lost recently. The success of Roku is precisely because they are an open model and any major streaming service can be accessed through it. So you get a Roku and you have wide open access to whatever subscription service you want, one and done. You kill that , you kill the platform.
I think the actual strategy would be to rebrand some or all Netflix content as also being native Roku content and expand distribution across all channels on the platform. That would make more sense to me as a proper expansion plan. But we shall see.

As Netflix management struggles to come to grips with the fact that people don't like to pay more for less, they've somehow convinced themselves that tanking other successful products is the best route forward. I look forward to watching Roku's market-share crumble right along with Netflix's as they do exactly the opposite of what you say.

I mentioned this to my wife before you posted and she pretty much said the same as you. Although your post had more business insight. If I was an exec at Netflix, I would spend my days trying to figure out how to rig Roku without breaking it. Roku has advertising and Netflix is going to need more of that if they want to survive. And you're right they need to move to a more open business model, such as premium channels like Showtime and new release movies on demand. At the very least, this would keep the monthly subscription price in check, which seems to be their biggest problem right now. Netflix does have a very efficient user interface, which can't be said for most of their major competitors. I feel like they don't put enough of their content in the interface. There has to be a middle ground where they provide more without providing all on the home page, like Amazon. They could have a link on the home page to all of the categories. That might be a good start, rather than having to type a search for a category.

You could but you'd be asking "who is that/whats going on here/why does XXXX/etc" the whole fucking time.
Yeah each season builds upon the last. You kinda need to see them all. I’d start back with 1 as it’s a good run and then go through the others. The last two episodes of season 4 don’t drop until 7/11 so you have some time.

Love this show. Their set designers are awesome. I'll see old logos from products when I was a kid and feel instantly transported back in time. They do such an amazing job with that shit. It's almost like a "Where's Waldo?" thing with consumer products from a Gen-X childhood.

Yes, when the first season came out, I felt that way the entire show. They did a great job getting the feel of what it was like growing up as a kid in the era.
Has anyone else noticed the references to other movies?
Hop and the big Russian in room of mirrors at the carnival fun house - Enter The Dragon The mind flayer oozing through door vents - The Blob Punks in Chicago walking as a group, on the street - Suburbia The Demodog blips on the "radar" screen in the Hawkins Laboratory - Aliens The Sailor themed Ice cream parlor - Fast Times at Ridgemont High

I started watching S1 with my oldest son. The wife and I are waiting for the last episodes of Season 4, but it was a fun rerun of the first one. It's a really good show. It's good the second time around as well.
We finished the last 2 episodes this morning. Really good, although we felt like Episode 9 could've been 30-45 minutes shorter. Some of the plots werw unnecessarily dragged on too long. But still good overall. Season 5 should be great!

Agreed.
Same. Awesome setup for whatever they do for this upcoming season.

"Most metal concert of all time" had me screaming it better be something I could riff out to.
Pastor of Muppets. Every time I pick up a guitar that's a go-to. Has been for thirty some years now.
I enjoyed it for what it was, though it did drag in spots. It feels like they're riding the "can't do any wrong" wave a little too hard at times, and not checking themselves as they go. But it's still fun, so I'll keep watching when they come back.
LOL I kinda want one of those BC Rich that Eddie plays, there's a presale on them, sure they will all sell and become a collectors item. The neck plate has the Hellfire Club logo on it

i was puzzled by all the old Iron City cans (local Pittsburgh beer) in one scene. find it hard to believe that IC made it out to Indiana in the 80's. i didn't even like that shit in highschool
Hop used Conan The Barbarian's sword to chop up the Demadoggythingy in the Russian Prison. Lots of nods to other movies throughout the four seasons. https://www.slashfilm.com/917783/hopper ... rzenegger/ "I don't know if you saw this, but that sword I pick up — it's the actual prop sword they used in Conan the Barbarian ... It's the sword that Schwarzenegger swings in the movie."
Watched the last episode last night.... sad to have it end. One of the cast members said they will finish writing Season 5 this year and begin filming in 2023. If all goes well, Season 5 will drop mid 2024.
