I just program on a MIDI roll in Cubase and assign that to whichever Drum Software I'm using. At the moment I'm very much into Addictive Drums which also comes with some ready-made beats.
Some of the beats are cool to check out, I will look at them in the MIDI map to figure out ho they are done.
Also, since I started programming drums I listen more carefully to drums in music. My programmed drums are still kind weak, but I am getting better at it I believe.

If you spend some time on it on a regular basis you will get the hang of it.

Well, I guess Im late to this party, but whatever.

I use tabit to tab out drums and export the midi file. Import that to reaper, load up SSD, and BOOM. Drum track lol. Total, usually takes me about 20 minutes to make a drum track for a whole song this way.

Also, I used to use Sonar, and I switched to reaper and never looked back. Sonar is a clunky mess in comparison, IMO.

I need to check out that Humanize thing in reaper...seems pretty cool!!

hmm what's Tabit? I need to look into this, seems like it's an easy process.

It's basically like a Guitar Pro type thing. I don't really see how it'd be easier than just sequencing it directly in the DAW. Not to mention if you want a real "live" sounding performance rather than a rigid sequence, you're still going to have to do more work on it in the DAW anyway.

I don't know if Tabit is similar to Guitar Pro, but I prefer GP because I can program the drums using the keyboard instead of mouse clicking. Work flow thing I guess, but for me it's a lot faster than trying to aim the mouse on the right spot. For example if I want four dotted 8th notes in a row I can do it with a press of a button instead of trying to figure where they land on the grid.

I have ordered ezdrummer and a metal drums add on pak. Ironically the pak has arrived first. Itching to get it all up and running.
