Passed phase 1 of Hazmat/Tanker school

Post by Steinmetzify »

Got bored, wanted a challenge.

Lot of you guys know I own a company that does cognitive memory assessments for insurance companies. It’s boring as fuck and I have one of P’s cousins run it for me, and have 2 of her other cousins as employees. I hate it and it depressed me; she noticed and when I got too much for her to handle, she told me to go do something else. I got a CDL and went to go work for FedEx; was always lame but most of the time profitable.

Got bored with that and looked around for something slower and a bit safer. Talked to a buddy, ended up at a company that does bulk Hazmat/tanker shit all over the country. Applied for what they call ‘jet-set’ which is fly out from home, 3 weeks on and one week off. Money is great, out of the house and doing shit, then get a mini vacation.

Finished phase 1 today, out of 3 phases. Took 3 weeks and I’m one of 6 guys out of 19 in my initial class. The other 13 guys just straight failed. No one quit, they washed out. I had ZERO idea how hard this would be but I’m working on it and stoked I’m here. Good group in my class, we all help and support each other. Some of us are great at this, some that, we all talk each other thru shit, it’s pretty cool.

Phase 2 starts Monday, we get our 1st day off in 3 weeks tomorrow. I’m fuckin drunk as shit because tomorrow is the 1st day in 3 weeks I haven’t had to study the night before and get up at 4:30am to shower/shave.

A: I’m stoked I got this far

B: explanation for why I’ve been so absent from this forum. I see the clips and drumjams and want to listen/participate but I can’t right now. Miss you guys, hope everybody is doing great/no monster forum-wide crisis and if there are, everybody else is helping you thru them.

Later fellas!

Schneider for bulk. It’s not the best money right out the gate but there are a shit ton of tanker companies local to me that start out at $120k and up for a year’s experience. I’ll run with these guys for 6 mos/1 year to get the experience and then move over.

Mostly I was looking for a slower game and a shit ton of safety. As anyone that’s ever worked for FedEx will tell you, safety is NOT their program, especially in the winter.

If your pops is serious PM me and he and I can get into it. For real, there’s a referral program; if he and I get down on a deal he makes a fat check and so do I. Would be cool on both ends.

I don't drive tankers, but, even after 30+ years of driving semi's, snow still shits me up :D

Congrats on the new job.

Thanks Mort. Part of this is your brother Paul...not gonna lie, it’s a part of getting to where you wanna be at that certain age, you know what I mean? I’m prob median age here on this forum but still. I want to retire in 20 years and my other shit doesn’t have anything to do with that. I want that to come from this.

I feel ya man. His influence is ever-present with alot of folks.

I wish I could find his first posts on HCOJ. He stumbled in there and got roasted right off the bat. The fucker rolled with it and almost instantly became "the most interesting man ever". And that was just from general banter. No one knew until YEARS later about his talents and experience. Such a sweet sweet guy.

Do you have to have any sort of OSHA 10- or 30-hour certification? Some of my job sites require an OSHA 10 within five years, even though they do not expire (Source: The Goddamn Federal Government), so I just went and got my 30, which covers everything an OSHA-10 does, only +20 (Source: Kindergarten math).

Gotcha, I have a few friends that do similar shifts with their Oil industry jobs, except it's 3 months on and 1 month off.

The Mrs good with that arrangement? I've seen that sort thing be tough with my friends and their Wives and Girlfriends..... at the same time some have no issues with it, a friend of mine's husband does something like 6 months on and 2 months off but they make it work.

Not to my knowledge, Hazmat and a TWIC card should be all I need from everything they’ve said.

Yeah she’s ok with it; she’s usually pretty supportive as long as I actually come home lol....last job had me end up back in MI and it was supposed to be same schedule, 3 weeks and then home for a week but COVID fucked that and I ended up staying for 4 months, she was pretty pissed. Goal would be to do this for a year to get the experience and then transition over to something local at home. There are jobs there starting at $100k+ but I need that verified experience.

It’s working out ok Geno...although I finally broke down and ordered an electric. 4:30am comes early as fuck, and anything I can do to sleep in for a few extra minutes/make the morning go smoother has to happen. Got decent reviews, see what happens.

Thanks fellas, stoked for a new chapter, see how it goes from here on.

Just curious, how many hours do you average behind the wheel a day when you're doing your deliveries?

Between 6-8....loading/unloading takes around two hours each, fueling takes 30 minutes, pre-trip takes 30 minutes etc....there’s a lot to this job that isn’t actually driving.

It’s usually a ten hour shift, we’re allowed by Fed regs to drive for 11 hours and work for 14 each day (work is anything to do with our load or the truck that’s not actually DRIVING) but no one does that.

Nice, congrats!! I drove for a while with a class B (dairy and frozen food to grocery stores, concrete mixer, and -very- briefly a trash truck) but always considered going hazmat. I'd probably go that route if I went back into trucking.

Sounds like a sweet gig!

Damn.... I don't know if I could drive for that kinda duration day in and day out.... I can barely sit behind my desk for that long lol... Pilots and truckers always impress me with their ability to keep focus for those kinda durations.
