Ostinato Rubato wrote:Since we're already political in this thread... You would do a lot more to curb gun violence if you ended the drug war vs. going after the guns.
There are so many issues in our society that the drug war creates or exacerbates.
Focus people. FOCUS.
Dude no doubt. Problem is we'd starve the prisons of people if we did that and we can't have that now can we?
Yeah, ending the war on drugs means ending for profit prisons. And ending for profit prisons means ending lobbying by for profit prison companies. And in order to do that, we need laws enacted by those that would be cutting off their own revenue stream by ending any form of lobbying.
See where the hang-up is?
So there really aren't that many for profit prisons (only 8.4% of prisons). That said there is a prison industrial complex made up by many individuals and groups that benefit/profit off of prisons staying as full as they currently are. Hell I remember a couple years back reading about prison barbers making over $80k (wut?) in Illinois.
But yeah agreed there are vested interests actively profiting on the war on drugs as it currently stands and that includes other, non prison realated , industries and companies (like perscription drug companies for example).
You want to go down the path of prescription drugs, then that fast leads to the ever increasing costs (i.e. executive bonuses) in the health insurance industry and how those two industries feed off of each other.
This has been, and will ALWAYS be our problem, as long as we romanticize and love our guns the way we do, and ignore mentally ill people the way we do.
It's not just one thing, it's both. You can look at other countries with the same or similar ratio of guns to citizens, that don't remotely have our rate of gun violence, and of course there are the countries that don't have nearly the ratio of guns to citizens, and also don't have anywhere the same rate of gun violence that we do, too.
If you just take the guns away, the perp will find another way. It's probably easier to just get in your car and mow a bunch of people down. Having said that, I'm still for stricter gun laws. Just because you make something strict, that doesn't mean you're trying to take it away. It should be harder than getting a driver's license for fucks sake.
As a black man, it does strike me as odd, that these perps always seem to be taken into custody (which is following procedure and good police work), while other men, who are obviously unarmed, and haven't committed a mass shooting, get clips emptied into them. Perhaps if they treated these perps like some black men are treated, the next one will think twice about it. There are certainly things I do, to NOT get clips emptied into me.

The Washington Post, an organization that's sympathetic in published rhetoric to what you just stated, has compiled a comprehensive database of all police shootings with data fields such as the race of those shot and whether or not they were armed. You might want to look through the data because what you wrote is just not true. I know it's a hard thing to accept when it's been a long held belief but it's important we stop saying untrue things.

Okay, but a few things, I said the word “seems”, that doesn’t exactly say I’m stating actual numbers, and if you look at the deaths by race, it’s 2 to 1, white/black, but blacks make up only 15% of the population, so if you do the math, it’s HEAVILY disproportionate.
I know the news shows what they want, not what’s actually happening, but there have been quite a few mass shooters taken into custody, because, that is what is supposed to happen.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter, it was a tangent, today is not about the disparity.
Do I really have to ask to keep political stuff off the forum? How about a graph?
