Bruce Bouillet. Jesus christ

Post by JiveTurkey »

Been cooped up watching A LOT of stuff as of late. One thing led to another and I ended up watching a bunch of newer-ish Boullet vids.

I'm a very specific Gilbert fan. I LOVE Second Heat album, Superheros and some other stuff selectively from the Racer X discog. I absolutely DESPISE Mr. Big. Like as much as Grimes hates Flock Seagulls; x that by 10 and we're talking. Poofy poodle hair, barf inducing garbage that could have been great but that singer just ruined it for me. "C'mon little sister". STFU. Yuck. Can't do it.

Anyhow......in watching these Boulliet (I am going to spell it wrong 15 times in this post alone probably) vids almost lead me to believe he is the cleaner player of the two  :hmm: It could be a tone thing; but dude is just so. Damn. CLEAN. In his playing. My god. I would have pretty much shit my pants watching these guys back in the day. It's pretty depressing to watch now  :bang:

Paul Gilbert is a badass and a pretty funny dude, I feel like he can instantly play anything that pops into his head without hitting a bum note. I'm no shredder, but that's where I want to get with my playing.

Never heard of this dude, I know you're shocked, but holy crap he is SURGICAL! Thanks JT, I feel pretty inadequate today and its not even 8:00am...

Paul Gilbert is one of my all time favorites, Itchy. I just HATE Mr. Big  Paul's attitude is great and he is mindblowing to watch on his own. So imagine these two dudes shredding together. Thread title confirmed

agreed on loving Paul G (and Billy SD) but not that Mr. Big singer. A sad pass for me
I took Paul G lessons online for a year and can attest the guy is a total beast. He also was Buckethead's teacher, so let that soak in for a moment.

Bruce can play, but not sure, where has he been? Also, note that he is using Friedman and not his signature Kruse amp. Great clean playing for sure, good to see he has been keeping it up.

Yes. I can understand why some would not dig it. It's like a hybrid of cock rock before it became awful and classic metal mixed with insane shred. Their bassist was Juan Aldrette(sp?) from the Mars Volta. Which seems weird but dude was a BEAST as well.

Glad to see someone else doesn't dig the whole "let me shake my tambourine and sing bluesly barf chick magnet shit" thing. I get it; but it just wasn't doing it for me

My good friend did the same (lessons), as well as a month or two with Skolnick. I don't have near the chops to think about it. I think he had a good time with Paul and Paul had him re-evaluating his whole techinique which kind of threw him for a loop. I think the Skolnick thing was more about "Hey Look! It's Alex from Testament!" vs. actually progressing.

Bouillet was in a band called (the)Scream. I think? Never listened to them because, other than Marty; all the mind blowing shred guys seemed to go lighter when they left their original bands vs., going to something heavier I would actually enjoy.

I've always heard of this band but never sought them out. You can tell, at least from this one song; that he was tired of playing "Let's see how fast we can develop carpal tunnel!" in Racer X  If the rest of the album is like this; I'll probably never seek out the rest. Sounds like Keel with better playing.

On a generally related note, IE shred dual guitar super groups; Racer-X>>>>>>>Cacophony. To me. All 4 dudes are beyond reproach but I think Racer-X actually pulls it off in an enjoyable song format while still shredding your face. Cacophony for me just doesn't.

I loved that player from Apocrypha, he wound up in 3rd Eye Blind?! No arpeggio shred opportunities but phat pay days lol

When I studies with Paul G it was through Artist Works. Paul has a real nice curriculum that builds- you don't need to be a fantastic player to jump into it. He starts at 0 beginner levels and builds to blistering arpeggio and skip patterns. The cool thing is you can record a short video and send it to him. Paul will video respond, give you specific feedback, then play what you played (way better) and give you all kinds of ideas on where to take it. It's not synchronous but god damn it was awesome.

I might sign up for the Blues course as I somehow made it through 35+ years without really knowing any blues licks lol. Could come in handy now that I live near Austin, need to know those things if I want to jump into an open mic improv jam

Alright, it took me two sessions but I listened to all of Second Heat. Some pretty amazing guitar acrobatics, to say the least. It's not how I want to play, but if I could play like that, that's probably what I'd do too, lol. I fully respect the technical ferocity of what they are doing there.
