I'mma say that Chris Cornell was on par with Ray Charles
Two totally different genres and styles but I'm comfortable saying that Cornell reached somewhere near the emotive depth as Ray but just in a different way. Few singers channel that much mass but they both did in spades.

I concur. I think Chris is one of the all-time greats. We've as yet to see if any great singers have sprouted in the last 10 years, but my money is on Craig Finn from the Hold Steady, Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons and maybe Tim McIlrath from Rise Against. I wish Darroh Sudderth from Fair to Midland would make some more music, it's been 8 years. How's he paying rent?

Is it wrong to not like Ray Charles' singing? Asking for myself.

From 2019....well, maybe? No idea when this song was made but I hadn't heard it, and I'm a huge Fair to Midland fan:

Re: I'mma say that Chris Cornell was on par with Ray Charles
While I love his Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and solo work, I always felt meh about his Audioslave work. At least until I had a friend, who's a big fan of Audioslave, explain some of his lyrics in that band recently and damn, his lyrics had alot of depth and inner turmoil to it that I never realized. Probably even more so than some of his Soundgarden work. Chris Cornell was just in a class of his own.

Re: I'mma say that Chris Cornell was on par with Ray Charles

Ray Charles had a very unique vocal sound that is instantly recognizable.
Chris Cornell, while an excellent and talented singer, not so much.
If they both sang the Star Spangled Banner, you'd know it was Ray.
You gotta have that to be an iconic vocalist.

I'd know it was Chris half-way through "Oh." Ymmv. I've been a fan since my roommate played me Louder Than Live in 1991.

Cornell is easily one of the most instantly recognizable voices in rock

Some people feel meh about Ray and some meh on Chris. All good. But to me Chris’s voice is instantly recognizable, not unlike Ray but obviously very different from one another. That’s part of why the comparison was drawn.

I just remember him sounding like a bunch of other guys. To be honest, it's been a while since I listened to anything he did.
Saw Soundgarden in the 90's... going to have to break out some of my old CDs for my car ride to work next week and check out some of his new stuff.

Kind of feels like likening King Diamond to Cab Calloway. Great stage presence!

Maybe I'm crazy but imagine Chris singing this with Ray, playing off of each other with a rock guitar part peeking in from time to time.
