I won't say I'm scared shitless at the moment, but I am scared because we're seeing some super troubling trends with large scale protests breaking out in states with stricter shelter-in-place rules than we have in SD, and governors in states like SD saying shelter-in-place wouldn't do any good. There's a combination of understandable frustration and less understandable stupidity all the way from the top to the bottom that's taking root and growing horribly fast.

It's tough to remain optimistic when watching massive failures in your own city like the Smithfield incident, while your governor is proclaiming that everything's fine in your state and we don't need to worry about it 'cause we're clean and pure, unlike those dirty New Yorkers. That gives you enough of a WTF level concern that you can't exactly stay positive about it.

I get some of her points/orders - but WHY are people not allowed to buy seeds??
I can't see any justification for that.

I live in East TN. As soon as everyone started staying at home the hardware stores got slammed with business. People finally had time to do home projects. Some of the main areas were painting along with lawn and garden. Some restrictions have been chosen to eliminate the reasons people wanted to go shopping outside of emergency projects.

Knoxville.

To be clear, there aren't any paint or gardening restrictions around here. I'm actually about to go get supplies for more projects right now!

Well that's only good if they stay at home.

If they're going to public places, like church or rallies, it doesn't matter how far apart their houses are.

They said that on Phase I of reopening they will allow gatherings of up to 10 people. That pretty much brings my gigs back to normal

100% true but I was just using that as an example of how few people there are there relatively and how less dense their lives are.
No one is going to parks because they’ve got big ass yards. No one takes public transit because there is none.
My point is that I don’t think we necessarily need to enforce rules onto rural areas in the same way we would urban ones. Of course they shouldn’t be getting large groups of people together.

Market futures point to a BIG open tomorrow AM in the market

The pharma stock Gilead (GILD) posted some promising news on Corona drug that showed some effectiveness for coronavirus. We also may start to see that some business in the private sector may be opening sooner than later but its up to individual states (not the FEDS) to determine, they are not opening all at once but in pieces with guidelines to follow for individual states/governers

We are NOT out of the woods yet and will absolutely still hit some 'speed bumps and pot holes' but there are some flickers of light and promise and maybe the upturn will be sooner than later, we can only hope so

Well the protest here in Lansing that clueless clipless and others supported really looked like a shitshow of complete degenerate ignorant assholes.

Strong white nationalist and nazi presence. lots of assualt weapons. ppl brought their kids. Lots of kill whitmer classy shit with bloody dolls of her wearing their nazi clothes.

Best was they were proud to block our lvl 1 trauma hospital from allowing ambulances to get in. Doctors were literally on the streets begging them to move and they wouldn't. Pictures of ambulances stuck in their traffic, unable to get to the hospital.

Tons of maga and trump banners. Really good ppl I'm sure. I feel bad for the cops who were there, risking their lives for such nonsense.

Its snowing and cold here fuck your snowflake protest over not being able to take a boat ride or plant a garden in the frozen ground. People are dying and racist assholes are blocking the hospital. fuck them and anyone who supports that bigotry and stupidity.

Those protests that block access to the hospitals for ambulances...that’s just the dumbest shit I’ve seen in a while...and that’s saying something.

I’m all for the right to organize and protest, but that’s too far

I really don't know why slee can't reply without resorting to name calling and hyperbole.
The whole ambulance thing was overblown, and not reported correctly.

Link from a Lansing paper - with comments from the fire department and hospital employees.

Lansing State Journal

yes, there were fringe elements there - as there would be at almost ANY anti-government protest.
Hard to keep the nuts out - without trampling all over people's rights - which was what this protest was about.

Sorry to hear that, Pepi. That truly sucks.

I'm a bit  over my state's current quandary. Granted, it's of our own making since, apparently, a large number of us are duncecaps of the highest order. Two raceways have decided that they are going to reopen and damn the consequences because . . . um, well, they're not sure. One of them has already sold almost a thousand tickets for a race this weekend. Authorities have said that they can't do anything about it because, and I quote, "We spoke with race officials and they are aware of the consequences. They simply feel it's more important to get back to business."

Maybe the human race is simply too stupid to survive this virus.

Another thing that is scary ... recovering people are developing other medical issues, like blood clots etc ...
While Rich was on the ventilator he developed a major leg blood clot. They were going to remove his leg but the family said NO. The family said it's time to remove him from the ventilator since he had been on it for over a week. He died within the hour.

Blood clots are somewhat common for people in the hospital that are immobile. It's fairly routine for patients to be fitted for the air-inflated leg massagers (not sure of the medical name...), even for some same-day surgery procedures. It's possible COVID-19 exacerbated that issue, but just as likely it was a result of hospitalization and being immobile on a ventilator.

Well, at least my state's doing everything it can to help thin the herd.

I'm thinking with a lot of the stupidity we're seeing demonstrated in the states the past week or two, we're going to have a VERY different country when this is all done.

Personally, I think (and hope) that you are wrong. The situation is bad, but it's not unprecedented. Things will change, but I don't think life will look substantially different once we're sure this has cleared. In fact, things that should change (governmental planning & preparedness, personal planning and preparedness, storage of PPE and supplies for rapid response, etc.) will likely not be given the importance it deserves. So, you know, business as usual. That's callous, but I'll need to be proven wrong...

This is undoubtedly true, but it becomes a much harder fact to come to terms with when it's your loved one on the ventilator.

It's impossible to avoid all death, but as a society we owe it to ourselves to try to minimize it as much as possible by making responsible choices and a certain degree of sacrifices.

The problem for us is that a large portion of our population are either ignorant or obstinately obtuse about the information that is out there telling us it's a good idea to stay socially distanced and are going out of their way to flaunt their position. Hosting a large race with a huge crowd when our state is still climbing up the amount of known cases day by day? That seems a very not-intelligent thing to do.

Yeah and it would be sort of fine if they were doing this to themselves but they will end up infecting people that have nothing to do with their position.

I bet a few of those folks already gave their grandma a big hug after returning from the rally. that's the real issue.
