From what I read... 2% of those stricken with coronavirus in Asia have died. An estimated .7% of those who get the virus will die in the USA. The lower US death rate is explained by a larger portion of Americans being healthier. The majority of those who have died were elderly and/or had compromised immune systems. I'm not worried at all but, we are concerned for my g/f's 90 year old mother.

Not saying to ignore it, but I think it's a bit overblown.
Oh give me a fucking break. Overblown? Definitely. Some left wing conspiracy to make Trump look bad? If the left had the capacity to manipulate at that level he wouldn’t have been president in the first place.

Fucking hell. If we could stop polarizing absolutely every issue into the left and right that would be great.
Throughout history there has been a 100-ish year periodicity between massive pandemics that has killed a fuckton of people. We're in that window now. It wasn't SARS, it might not be coronavirus, but at some point in the near-now-ish it's not unreasonable to expect that something will take hold and give the human race at least a moderate bumming.

I think trump's bumbling, fact free mishandling of the situation makes him look a lot worse all on his own but yeah blame the media bc Rush told you to say that.
He fired a team of experts in this very pandemic response field bc you know Obama and all.
Supply chains are disrupted already, if it gets worse that could be a problem. You can call that fake news but it's not.
It's pretty messed up is what it is..... This has nothing to do with US politics so lets just leave that out of the conversation....
To me the most frightening thing about this virus besides how easily it's spread is how little we REALLY know about it.... I could go full tin foil hat and wonder if this was some sort of bio-weapon being developed by the Chinese... ticks lots of boxes really, easily transmitted from person to person, spreadable while in the gestation period, pretty deadly and the ability to re-infect people..... all in all...
That being said.... just like the other pandemics we've had, I'm sure vaccines and treatments will be found soon....
The worst part of this is Trinidad has issued travel restrictions to a bunch of countries, China, Singapore, a few other Asian countries and now Italy..... I have a trip that's alllll paid for at the end of May to France and the UK so I'm just hoping those two countries get their shit together and stay off the list or else I could be out of some cash lol...

That sucks about the possible trip cancellation - hadn't heard about the other point. If that's the case, a 'traditional' vaccine that gets your system to build up antibodies/resistance to a virus wouldn't even work, would it?

I have no clue.... from a base understanding on how vaccines work I'd say you're right and it could be why it's proving to be difficult to get a vaccine in the first place..... I'm not expert from what I've read but could be due to slight mutations or how the virus works altogether.... in the end it's still not unheard of look at Chicken Pox, typically once you've gotten it you're not supposed to get it a second time, but there are cases of people getting it a second time so who knows.... all this goes back to the most worrying thing about this virus, how little we actually know.... which goes back to my tin foil hat mode of what the Chinese were doing with it and are they withholding information about it
- the death rate at the epicenter of the epidemic (Hubei) is 2%. That's considered low risk. It's twice the rate of regular influence but 5x lower than the SARS rate was. Outside of the epicenter the death rate is 1%, same as the flu.
-100% of the confirmed deaths are people who had compromised immune systems to begin with. Which is bad news for the elderly, small children and people with chronic autoimmune diseases. But healthy adults should be able to go through the virus incubation cycle with only mild symptoms, which lasts between 5-14 but more often in the lower end than the higher.
- regular higiene mesures like washing your hands and keeping a 7-10ft distance from someone coughing ARE effective preventive measures.
I work for a global travel company for a day job and we get daily updates directly from the WHO. They're available for the public too. I suggest you read those instead of sensationalist media eager to turn fear into clicks/hits.

I think the scary part is just how easily it's contracted and spread, compounding the reality that everyone knows someone that would fall in to that compromised immune system category.... I don't want to be the person that gets it, visits my mother and gives it to her only to have her kick the bucket.... it's a stretch but a reality... so while i'm not so worried about me getting it and dying.... I'm just thinking about how easy for it to spread like wild fire, especially on an island like Trinidad where we aren't really set up for full quarantine of large quantities of patients... I could see it spreading like wild fire
Obviously there's always cause from concern when there's a possibility of any global viral outbreak. I'm just saying to look for official sources of information and that hysteria (not from you lol, public in general) at this point is unwarranted.

haha.... didn't think you were singling me out lol.... and yeah... there are some people that are on 10/10 panic alert when this really just needs a 5/10 IMO.... you can't ignore it, but there's no need to go in to full doomsday mode.

I agree...... But, when HHS and the CDC are releasing polar opposite statements, it's hard to not be a little concerned. Couple that with the rambling, incoherent press conference by the president, him putting that idiot Pence in charge of the response and the fact that China lies about everything, it becomes even harder to not worry. This is a situation where credibility of the leadership is paramount. The trump administration has none and they did THAT to themselves with all of their lying and denial of science. On top of that, when there are basically sychophants and loyalists running the show, the safest assumption is that everything is propaganda.
And regarding a media hit job to make them all look bad, that isn't required. They do a stellar job of that themselves.
Take a look at how that lady in California got Coronavirus. Against the CDC's abject opposition, HHS decided to fly the 14 infected patients from the cruise ship Diamond Princess, back to the U.S. with the 329 healthy passengers plus the crews. Then they were taken to Travis A.F.B. were they were attended to for the first 5 days by around 100 HHS personnel from the Child Services Department with no training and no protective gear. These HHS personnel were allowed to leave the base to get lunch, dinner and stay in hotels. The outbreak is probably inevitable, but a little common sense goes a long way to at least preventing the preventable.
What's scary is what happens when a country like Cambodia gets the virus and has no infrastructure to stop it.

Forget Cambodia.... what about all the African nations? Ebola, which isn't half as infectious as Carona, reeked havoc over there.... I mean, to get ebola we're talking about swapping bodily fluids, Carona is just cough and sneeze....
The day we have a virus that spreads like corona and kills like Ebola we're really all fucked. But Corona alone is relatively mild compared to most viruses.
