Just listened to Baroness (seriously) for the first time.
I know I might have heard a song or two over the years but never intently listened to them before now. I have been aware of them for years but I always filed them under "let's judge the book by it's cover and go ahead and listen to Mastodon". Not a slam on them as much as I have limited desire for this type of prog-tinged-sludge and I don't really care to investigate further.
Live at The K Pit came across my YT feed. Great series where bands go in and play super small little venue to a bunch of their fans.

Couple of fresh(ish) thoughts.
Great musicianship. Rhythm section is killer and both of the guitarists are great. Upon hearing (I think) track 1 or 2; it was definitely reliving my Mastodon Jr. thoughts. Guitar tones are killer and the uncoventional (to metal as I know it) gear works great in this context.
Vocals are really strange fit for me. Can't say I enjoy them. I enjoyed the emotion and delivery behind them; but the tones and vocal lines are a little out of my wheelhouse. Is there something else from these guys I should be checking out?

Why you would subject yourself to either band is beyond me. Every time I hear a song by them I start reflex gagging. There's just something about them that hits my no-no spot.
I mean, if you dig 'em you dig 'em, but if you don't? Why keep trying? There's plenty of bands that are enjoyable to soak up the time you'll waste trying to convince yourself to like somebody just because you're supposed to.

Ehh I wasn't forcing myself into it. Just thought I would give them a little more of my attention as they have always seemed to be "highly revered".
Mastodon is killer. No f**ks given on that one

Guess we're in different worlds on this one. I tried with Mastodon once. Once was enough.
I feel like I've been a real dickhead lately. I think the job's wearing me down.

Have you heard the new Sepultura? Despite Derrek Green (actually; even he sounds good on it); it's pretty d@mn good. And probably a fair bit more in your wheelhouse

Yeah, that Sepultura tune is surprisingly unterrible. I hadn't paid much attention to them for . . . let's say a while. Most of the newer stuff I'd come across gave me
. This one's actually pretty decent.

Try Chlorine & Wine, or Take My Bones Away. Or just start with the Purple album IMO.
I was kinda meh on these guys too until I went to see them live. Saw them on the Purple album tour (different 2nd guitarist) and again last spring and they're pretty good live.
Same with Mastodon actually. Didn't really care for it to start, now I quite enjoy them.

Yeah this is how I was with Mastodon too. Real hit or miss on the early stuff but as albums went on I like them more and more. Still prefer last 3 or so albums to the first couple.

Oddly timely find in relation to this thread

She does the tune justice. I apparently need to start listening to Mutoid Man as well.

I feel the same. I've got all their stuff, and I think the early material was heavy but was missing the melody. My favorites are The Hunter, Once More Round The Sun, and Emperor of Sand. I seems that since Brann has been doing more of the vocals, it's taken everything up a notch.

As for Baroness, I'm a huge fan of theirs too. It certainly wasn't instant. I got the Blue Album first and I started listening to it while on my nightly walks. It just crept up on me and after 3 or 4 plays I was totally smitten. Honestly, I like all of their stuff, but Gold & Grey is the weakest. There are really only two songs on it that interest me. The rest of it seems like a lot of slow meandering bullshit, but maybe I need to listen to it more. That's the thing with Baroness though. They grow on you like fungus.

You definitely should. Bleeder is a killer record.

Also might be worth checking out Stephen Brodsky's other stuff too, I always dug Cave In, Jupiter is another fucking excellent album.
And as long as we're on the subject of Mutoid Man/Baroness covers I stumbled on this one the other day and enjoyed it.
