I think it was actually an SM7 "A". Not the "new and improved" B version.

I just wanted to chime in and say I bought a SM7B over the weekend based off your recommendation. I used it on the latest drum jam and all I gotsta say is it felt good pressing my lips up against it
Seriously though I love that mic. Was using an sm57 before that but when ever I sang at full volume it was too much for it combined with me not knowing shit = never really happy with it. Guess I need to get better at singing now. Mahalo! GAB DrumJams - YouTube & Soundcloud

I also went with the SM7B.
I I did about 4 hours of tracking (my voice is now fucked) and I think it came out great. I used my DIYRe 500 chassis preamp with the Cinemag colour module and it sounded great. Clean, clear but not harsh or brittle like my condensers.

If you want a game changing mic for studio that is very reasonably priced......check out a new company called Weissklang.
They sell 2 different mics. They are handmade in Germany, and they are simply amazing.
I bought both versions...v17 and v13.......I am done buying mics.

I have been a recording engineer since the 1970s. I bought a Neumann U-67 in 1980 (used, built in 1961). Today this is considered one of the best mics in the world. Here is the thing, though.
If you can afford a good mic, it will pay for itself - not in sessions, but just increasing in value. I thought I overpaid when I handed over $1500, but I sold that mic a few years ago for $7,000. If I had held out, today they are close to $10k.
When I sold it I bought a new handmade Pearlman TM1 used for $1200. Today they are selling for $1800 used. That was just five years ago.
AND YOU GET THE BENEFIT IF BEING ABLE TO USE IT WHILE YOU OWN IT.
Specifically, these are LDC tube mics - you will not find a better vocal mic anywhere. Beyond that - IRL you are going to end up using just one or two mics all of the time once the drums are done. I believe all you need is an sm57 for guitar cabinets and any LDC for vocals and almost everything else.
